Mt. Io
Mount Iō is an active volcano located in eastern Hokkaido near Kawayu Onsen. The mountain is known for its powerful steam vents, where white volcanic gas rises continuously from the ground. Visitors can see the yellow sulfur-covered rocks and feel the heat of the geothermal area up close. As one of the iconic natural spots in Akan–Mashu National Park, it offers a unique opportunity to experience Hokkaido’s volcanic activity firsthand.
JR Kitahama Station, located in Abashiri, is famous for being the closest station to the Sea of Okhotsk. From the platform, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the ocean, and in winter it becomes a popular spot to see the drift ice. The station building includes a viewing deck and a small café, allowing visitors to relax while taking in the scenery. Known as a filming location for movies and TV dramas, it is one of the most photogenic stops along the coast.
The Aurora is an icebreaking sightseeing ship that departs from Abashiri Port, offering passengers the rare opportunity to experience the powerful drift ice up close. You can feel the ship’s vibrations and hear the ice cracking as it breaks through the frozen surface—an unforgettable winter experience. Please note that drift ice is a natural phenomenon, and sightings cannot be guaranteed depending on the conditions of the season.

Niseko's powder snow is the best, so I visit every year. I want to enjoy the food, lessons, interacting with foreigners, Mt. Yotei, spring water, backcountry, wine, hot springs, scenery, snow rafting, etc. I think it's a bit far from New Chitose Airport, taking two hours.
