The parade and the swearing in ceremony of new American citizens from 28 countries were highlights of a true 4th of July celebration complete with a picnic

  • Very interesting, informative and pleasant walk on a Sunday 10/10

My wife and I spent most of the day Sunday 10/10 visiting this place and enjoyed it very much. From about 10:30 am to closing at 4 pm. Picture of a map with list of buildings is attached. Of the 49 restored/ relocated buildings here we visited all but about 6-7 that were closed. Representative pictures of the site are attached. Many had a person in period costume giving information about the building or activity associated with it. All the people here were very friendly and provided interesting information or demonstrations ( i. e. Blacksmith, tinsmith, weaving, farm animals, making apple cider, etc). We also listened to an informative presentation about the Genesee Valley canal, no longer a canal but now a greenway by Janice-Mary who was also the docent in the Hamilton house #47. She did a very good job at both. Picture of her during the canal talk is attached.

The cooper I found was The most interesting craft and he took the time to explain who he made the butter-churn and the buckets. We really enjoyed it when they called the Oxen and they came up to plow the field. The entire experience was very educational. .

WOW! A short distance from Buffalo (shorter from Rochester) and a gem of a place to visit. Had no idea that the "village" was so big and ended up only seeing half of it! We will certainly be back! If you like history then this place is a must! For example, one of the houses was lived in by George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak, when he was a young boy. The docents are all so nice and they are insightful and interesting. Still amazed that for $18 a person ($16 if you are a AAA member!) you have admission to a wonderful collection of buildings that are all "native" to NY! This place is huge! Had such a wonderful time and really wish we arrived earlier in the day so we could have experienced the entire "village". Highly recommend!

We have visited the Genesee Country Village and Museum multiple times but this was our first trip back in about a dozen years. We had great anticipation leading into our visit but left underwhelmed. Several of the shops in the village were closed - including perennial favorite General Store, and in some of the ones that were open the staff/volunteers did not appear thrilled to be there. The Blacksmith Shop, always a good one, was reduced to a $3.00 money grab to make a cheap tin ornament. Yes, we got to see the Octagon House, one of our faves, but after a forty minute ride we were in and out in less than 75 minutes. We came with high expectations and left feeling it was a bust.

REally a superb day out. It is well laid out with a big range of buildings dating from 1800 onwards I think. The people inside the houses (educators/guides) really know their stuff and were able to answer all our questions, and were so enthusiastic on a hot day. We are a British family and so it was really special for us to realise that the area was settled by Europeans so very recently, and also to realise how tough and resourceful those people were. I felt very inspired by this place and would go back (if I could). We have visited a similar Living History place called Heritage Park in Calgary, which we also loved but Genessee was nicer in some ways because there were no crowds when we went. The General Store was my favourite building and there was a lovely lady inside who told us all about it. I felt that we got a real slice of American history. It was my 16 year old's favourite day of the trip.

I took 3 children ages 11 and 13 and myself 61 yrs. I was actually surprised how much the children all LOVED it. The people who were portraying the villagers were very informative and could answer about any question you asked. The kids would run from house to house because they couldn't wait to see what the next one would hold. It was a great day! Well worth the 2 hour trip. We were there 4 hours and could easily spend another day there. So much information we didn't get to read.

  • Excellent Place to explore, learn and spend the day!

First time in Mumford NY, visiting the Genesee Country Village & Museum. Not very crowded, due to the rain upon arriving at 10am, with umbrellas and curiosity we enjoyed the village on a self guided tour. The staff were dressed in period clothing, and provided educational information about the house/the people who lived/worked in the area and time. The sun peaked out by lunch time, we had enjoyed a hot dog/hamburger with iced tea at the Depot Restaurant. We walked the grounds (3 hours), watched a sheep shearing, toured the various houses, purchased a cookie made with rosewater and had a lovely day! We would visit again, and recommend friends/family to see it also. Highly recommend this village as a sight seeing destination off Interstate 90. Due to the gravel pathways, wear comfortable clothes/ shoes, and be prepared to walk 3 miles at your own pace, not many benches for people to sit and enjoy the sights. There are plenty of bathrooms, and an air conditioned gift shop. Bring a hat for sunny days, bug spray for comfort and umbrella for cloudy skies.

  • Love this Place!

I went for at least the 25th time since its opening in the 1970’s, and it keeps getting better, especially under the able leadership of new President, Becky Wehle, who carries forward the vision of her grandfather, Jack Wehle. On this visit, we heard Becky’s presentation on future plans, which included taking questions and advice from the member audience. We then visited the Jack Wehle gallery of sporting art, that included special exhibits of 19th c. fashions. The lady representative inside was very helpful in directing us to special areas such as the “stagecoach” made in Rochester. We then took an outer loop outside the village (including the Shaker house and gardens) before visiting the Village houses. Special thanks to Terry who was in the Hosmer Tavern handing out chocolate puffs with a big and welcoming smile. We noted that ramps for the other abled were being installed, allowing easier entry into the 19th c. homes. One final note, we have attended many antique preview galas, and during the past few years of Becky’s leadership, the food is better than ever! It is a privilege to be able to have this wonderful place to visit and forget for awhile the burdens of our 21st century life!
