5.00Not to be missed! Expansive working farm with a beautiful plantation home and gardens. The tour guides provide interesting short talks on the history of the property and the Gullah culture. You can enjoy a light lunch in the cafe after your tours. Very interesting place.

5.00Boone Hall was a true southern gem not to be missed! The setting, the rich history, and the ability to take a walk back in time was eye-opening. This is a not-to-be-missed tour - recommend getting there when the grounds open to beat the heat!

2.00The plantation grounds, particularly the oak lined entrance with a lovely canopy and Spanish moss, are quite beautiful. It’s great that the site has been recently preserved through local land trust to keep green historical spaces open for future generations. Though many of the buildings date back to the origin, the mansion itself has been rebuilt. They operate as both a tourism site and a working farm and there are many fields in various stages of growth. As far as the historical significance, John Boone was a slaver of questionable character. He married into the land grant and set up a major plantation to benefit from his trade via agriculture. It is extremely difficult to reconcile the beauty of the post modern main hall and the surrounding countryside with the horrors of the past it was built upon. The site has made some attempts, giving a balanced presentation of the past at the slave cabin site. They’ve also added a Gullah session which alludes to the sheer horror of the Portuguese slave trade and the traditions that emerged from shared hardship. All in all, it is a somber experience to visit. Like much of the South, Boone Hall has been pressured into acknowledging the immorality of slavery. However, in my visit to South Carolina, it strikes me that they wish to gloss over the past evils and move on. That does absolutely NOTHING for the generations of African families whose life trajectories were incontrovertibly disrupted and destroyed. As an aside, I will say that I am a white male with and a brown wife. At the reception, we found the woman there to be very unfriendly and dominating with regards to ‘lining up.’ After attempting to bully my wife, she appeared quite flummoxed to discover that we were a couple. As I said, the South appears to remain be rooted in the past, just not in a very positive way.
Boone Hall Plantation should be on everyone’s bucket list.

5.00We really enjoyed everything about our tour and time at the plantation. The plantation is well maintained. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. We learned a lot! It was such a pleasant experience and a great value for the price. I recommend going. We planned to be there a few hours and ended up staying for most of the day.

5.00This was a great addition to our trip, educational but fun. Beautiful place. We enjoyed hearing about the history on the house tour and the ride around the grounds. Wear comfortable shoes, the grounds are sandy, so sandals may not be best.
