It’s about a 15-minute walk along a backstreet from Shibuya’s Hachiko Square to Shinsen Station. I pass through the gate of a traditional Japanese Buyo(dance) studio in Maruyama-cho. The interior of the Studio is very clean, and I can feel a strong sense of “ki” (energy). Then, I changed into my dance shoes(Tabi) and head to the practice room. After being taught the etiquette and customs here, as well as how to hold the Sensu, I take the stage right away. The instructor explained the meaning behind the movements of my hands, the Sensu, and my body. I then went straight onto the stage and began practicing in sync with her. Using my body and the Sensu, I depicted scenes and emotions in time with the music. This was difficult, but quite interesting. Finally, to wrap things up, We performed a dance that lasted about two minutes! I’ve heard that in the past, there were about 40 Geisha in Shibuya, and there were also many establishments where they could perform. To become a Geisha, one must master many skills—including etiquette, dance, musical instruments, singing, and the art of hospitality—and it takes many years to become fully qualified. However, some people practice these skills simply as a “hobby” these days. As it turns out, the stage at this hall we were allowed to visit served as the set inspiration for the Japanese movie *Kokuho*, and we learned that the two lead actors and Ken Watanabe actually spent a long time here learning dance and etiquette. Just stepping onto a stage like that is a precious experience in itself. I highly recommend that you all give it a try.

This was such a fun experience! We got to spend a lot of time practicing the dance, which made it easy to learn and enjoy. Seeing the teacher perform up close was amazing—the movements were so graceful and beautiful. I’m really glad I joined this tour and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in Japanese culture.

This was an amazing experience. I have always wanted to see the Geisha dance in live. This is a must have experience to understand Japanese culture. It was such a wonderful learning experience and learned differences between Geisha dance and Japanese traditional dance.

It was absolutely an magical experience, which I was pleasantly impressed by. The lovely guide showed me around the area, introducing to hidden gems of the district, taking me to a studio where I was greeted by a geisha and a dance teacher. The studio is a well known in Tokyo, used recently by a film crew to study a traditional Japanese dance for the movie. I was gently dressed up in a traditional costume ( even I never expected it), but ladies were sooooo nice that it was not possible to decline. They performed a few traditional dances, where I could feel the gracious of Japanese women, they invited me to experience dance movements, which would be unforgettable memories for me about Japanese culture. I was invited to ask questions and told a few interesting facts about Japanese geisha culture. The experience was a highlight of my time in Tokyo and connected me to local people. Thank you very much.

The Geisha studio tour was absolutely amazing. We learned about Geisha culture and the authentic traditions of Geisha. Even though I’m Japanese, it was my first time visiting places like this. Watching the Geisha perform Nihon Buyo (traditional Japanese dance) was especially memorable—the movements were graceful, elegant, and it reflected traditional Japanese culture. I was surprised to hear that many actors visit this studio to not only to practice the Niho Buyo , but also to learn the traditional Japanese etiquette and manners. And last but not the least, one of the exciting part of this tour was that we got to dance the Nihon Buyo. The Geisha taught us some of the dance movements, and we had the opportunity to stand on stage and dance with them!!

After an incredible week in Japan, this tour ended up being the perfect final chapter of our trip before flying home. We started our journey with a Tsukiji tour and a sushi‑making class, which really set the tone for how much we wanted to experience the “real” side of Japanese culture. This geisha experience in Shibuya felt like the ideal way to wrap everything up. Watching the geisha dance from just a few feet away was absolutely mesmerizing. Every movement with the fan felt intentional and full of meaning, and I found myself completely drawn in. When she invited us to try a few simple motions, I suddenly realized how much discipline and control are behind each graceful gesture👏 It was intimate, authentic, and honestly one of those moments that stays with you long after the trip is over. As a final memory before heading home, it was everything I hoped for and more!!
