I had the most wonderful experience trekking with this group. Our guides Memet and Nasir catered the whole experience to the group making it one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. The type of trekking was very varied from climbing to river rafting giving us the full jungle experience! Not to mention our excellent chef Indra who ensured we never went hungry with the most beautiful local Cusine. I’d give 10 stars if possible, would recommend!

What an incredible experience! We joined the 3 Days / 2 Nights Sumatra Orangutan Trekking tour and honestly couldn’t have asked for a better adventure. From the moment we booked about a month in advance, everything was perfectly organized. Communication via WhatsApp was always quick and easy, our accommodation was arranged for us, and the airport pickup went completely smoothly. We chose a private tour and were accompanied by two amazing guides and a fantastic cook. Everyone went above and beyond to make sure we had the best possible experience. Throughout the trek, they constantly checked if we were doing okay, needed a break, or needed anything at all. We felt very well taken care of from start to finish. We were also incredibly lucky with the wildlife. We saw so many orangutans during the trek, along with several different monkeys and beautiful birds. One of the most special parts was that three orangutans regularly visited the area around our campsite, which made the whole experience even more magical. And the food exceeded all expectations! Every meal was freshly prepared, absolutely delicious, and different from the one before. We had such a great variety of dishes and were genuinely surprised by the quality and amount of food available in the middle of the jungle. To top it all off, the tubing ride back to the village was so much fun and the perfect ending to an unforgettable adventure. This was without a doubt one of the highlights of our trip to Indonesia. The entire team was incredibly kind, professional, and passionate about what they do. We made memories that will stay with us forever and would recommend this experience to anyone visiting Sumatra. Thank you for such a wonderful adventure!

The most magical experience of our lives! Our guides Nasir and Ragil went above and beyond to ensure our experience was the best as well as teaching us so much about the jungle and wildlife. To see the Orangutan roaming freely in their natural habitat is a truly unforgettable experience. We enjoyed beautiful fruit platters and lunch during our trek, and we were welcomed back to camp with tea and biscuits each day with an amazing selection of local dishes for dinner later in the evening. I would 100% recommend booking with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking to anyone.

Me and my partner did a 3 day jungle tour and honestly one of the best 3 days of my life. Saw more than enough wildlife and was very happy with the whole experience. The office are very helpful and cater any specific needs all at a very good price. Our guides Nasir and Ragil taught us so much about the ecosystem and constantly having a laugh with us so never a dull moment. They provide more than enough food and make sure that you have comfortable nights in the jungle. These boys don’t get enough credit. Would 100% recommend to anyone interested and definitely book with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking.

A Truly Memorable Experience with Some Valuable Opportunities for Improvement Overall, we had a wonderful experience with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking and would absolutely recommend them to anyone wanting to experience the rainforest and its incredible wildlife. The organisation, communication and several members of the team were genuinely excellent, and the memories we made will stay with us forever. From the moment we booked, Dedek was fantastic. He was responsive, informative, organised and always happy to answer questions. It made the whole process feel easy and reassuring, particularly when travelling to a remote part of the world. The biggest highlight of all was our guide, Sam. He was professional, responsible, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the orangutans and the rainforest. What impressed us most was the respect he showed towards the wildlife. At no point did he appear interested in turning sightings into a tourist spectacle. Instead, he maintained appropriate boundaries and allowed us to observe these magnificent animals in a way that felt ethical and respectful. Over the course of our trek, we were fortunate enough to see eight orangutans, including an impressive alpha male and two young babies. Seeing them in the wild was a privilege I will never forget. Unfortunately, some of the behaviour we witnessed from guides belonging to other trekking organisations was concerning. When the alpha male was first spotted, he quickly became surrounded by a large crowd of tourists and guides. Whilst he didn't appear distressed, several guides decided to lure him closer using bananas. This felt inappropriate and potentially dangerous, both for the orangutan and the people around him. Unsurprisingly, when he came closer than expected, those same guides appeared to panic and encourage him away. We witnessed similar behaviour later when fruit was used to entice a mother and baby closer to tourists. Habituating wildlife to seek food from humans feels risky for everyone involved and doesn't sit comfortably alongside the conservation message many visitors come to support. To be completely clear, Sam was not involved in any of this and, from everything we observed, I genuinely don't believe he ever would be. If anything, the contrast highlighted just how professional and respectful he was. As someone with a physical disability, I would also encourage the company to provide more realistic information about the physical demands of the trek. Nothing I had seen beforehand fully prepared me for the reality of the terrain. On Day 1 alone we ascended and descended two jungle-clad mountains. The climbs were manageable, but many of the descents were extremely steep, with some sections feeling close to vertical and only occasional ropes available for assistance. After learning that Day 2 would involve even steeper and more challenging terrain, we made the decision to end our 3-day trek on the morning of Day 2. Importantly, this was entirely our decision. We neither requested nor expected any refund. We had already enjoyed incredible wildlife sightings and felt fortunate to have experienced what we had. Equally, we would never have wanted our decision to negatively impact Sam or Memet, both of whom worked hard to ensure we had a safe and memorable experience. Instead, Memet guided us on a beautiful walk back through the jungle river before we were collected by motorbike. It was actually a lovely experience in its own right and a fitting end to our time in the rainforest. For future guests with mobility limitations, I think a few photographs showing the actual terrain would be incredibly helpful. The guides themselves were not aware of my mobility issues and initially assumed the challenge was fitness-related, which wasn't the case. Better information beforehand would simply help people make informed decisions. The other area that could benefit from improvement is the overnight camp. I fully appreciate this is jungle camping and not a luxury resort, and I wasn't expecting hotel standards. However, some very simple improvements would make a huge difference. The mosquito net had large holes in it, the pillow was heavily affected by mould and mildew, and the sleeping mat would benefit from an additional layer or cover. These feel like relatively inexpensive fixes that would significantly improve comfort without taking away from the authentic jungle experience. The river was wonderful for washing and cooling down, and the toilet facilities were basic but perfectly functional. A special mention must also go to Mama, the camp chef. The food was genuinely outstanding. Considering we were deep in the rainforest, every meal was delicious. My personal favourite was an incredible jungle tempeh sambal stir-fry that I would happily eat again tomorrow. My final observation relates to hospitality. Most of the team were lovely, but there were a handful of occasions where guides (again, not Sam, and not necessarily from this organisation) appeared to be discussing guests amongst themselves. Whether intentional or not, it can leave visitors feeling slightly uncomfortable. A warm welcome and making people feel included is every bit as important as guiding them safely through the jungle. Despite these points, this was still a truly special experience. We encountered incredible wildlife, met some wonderful people and gained an enormous appreciation for the rainforest and those who work within it. With a little more attention to accessibility information, camp maintenance and ensuring ethical wildlife interactions remain a priority across all operators, this experience could be exceptional. Thank you, Dedek, Sam, Memet and Mama, for helping create memories that Amy and I will treasure for a lifetime. Rating: 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The whole experience was incredible. We saw so many different orangutans and 7 other types of monkeys. The trek can be a bit challenging but the guides only go at a pace you’re comfortable with and have lots of breaks. Our guides Nasir, Ridho and Sugi (Jungle Mumma) were the highlight of the trip. They were always smiling, brought a great energy and made us feel very safe in their care. And the food they provided for us was unreal. I would recommend this tour to anyone. It’s got everything you need and it’s great value for money.

We did a 3-day 2-night tour in May 2026, and it was absolutely incredible. We saw so many cool animals, and learned so much. Nasir and Arif were both really fun to spend time with, and we feel lucky to have had them as our guides. They both speak really good English, and we enjoyed getting to know them and learning about the jungle/Sumatra. They were both really knowledgeable, and you could tell that both were really passionate about the jungle and the animals. From the moment we arrived at the office to the moment we left, we felt really looked after and welcome - all the staff we met were super friendly and welcoming. The one thing I was a bit worried about before we went was whether I would have enough food, but the meals were ridiculously nice and plentiful, and we were offered so many snacks that I don't think I even got close to being hungry at any point. We spent three weeks in Indonesia/Malaysia, and I think somehow they managed to make the nicest food we ate during the entire trip in the jungle. We booked a transfer with the company from Medan to Bukit Lawang and back, and for both journeys the car was on time, and we had a stress-free journey with a good driver. Having heard other people talk about the amount of time the tourist buses can take, we don't regret arranging the transfer. If we're ever lucky enough to go back to Bukit Lawang, we would definitely book again with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking.
