  • Extraordinary experience, exceeded our expectations

We had been waiting a long time to realize our dream of visiting Churchill and having the chance to see the polar bear in its natural habitat. It was an extraordinary experience, amazing from every point of view. The organization of the days was perfect and our guide, Alex, enriched the trip by giving us many explanations and insights, both from a naturalistic / environmental and cultural point of view; to this is added a great professionalism and a very customer-oriented approach and its needs, cementing our group and making the experience even more enjoyable. Although we are used to traveling a lot alone with my husband, managing our times/schedules/stops and movements, we had a great time and we definitely recommend this agency for an extraordinary trip in search of the king of the Arctic.

We went on the classic polar bear experience-the last week of October 2025. We opted for the in-town experience vs. The Tundra Lodge as we wanted private bathrooms and sleeping areas. It was the perfect choice for us. We were glad we had a day between our Tundra Buggy days. Back to back days of that wouldn’t have worked as well as having a day of other activities in between. The cultural presentations and restaurant experiences were stellar. We never felt rushed or over scheduled, and we were able to get a true understanding of the culture and history of the Swampy Cree and Sayisi Dene people and the population of Churchill. The accomodations are basic, so don’t expect upscale ‘inns’. Our accomodations at the Aurora Inn were clean, quiet and roomy. Our guide, Alex was exceptional. He put the needs of the group above his own. On Halloween, The Blue Jays were in the World Series. The Northern Lights made a surprise appearance, and he got everyone up to see it, and made sure everyone had the photos they wanted. He missed the end of the game. Exceptional customer service! Now, for the bears- Alex was a wealth of information and our drivers came across over 20 bears over our two days of Tundra Buggying- including a momma and cubs, sparring adolescents and a myriad of others waiting for the sea ice. It was just unreal. My only suggestion to Frontiers North would be to age-balance the tours- as best can be done. We would have liked to have had a few more younger people on our tour. Thank you for an incredible experience with stellar staff and impeccable service.

Actually, I took the "Tundra Buggy Lodge: Town & Polar Bears" tour. This tour includes a three night stay at the Tundra Buggy Lodge and a one night stay at a hotel in Churchill so you can see both the bears and the town. The tour spends the first and last night at an airport hotel in Winnipeg, which is convenient for our charter flights to and from Churchill. After we arrived in Churchill, we had a tour of the town before we reached the Tundra Buggy Lodge. Near the airport is the town jail. But this jail is not for people. It is for bears. Naughty polar bears are sent to the Polar Bear Holding Facility and later flown to a wilderness area away from the town. We also saw the wreck of Miss Piggy and the town Inukshuk. I enjoyed our visit to the Itsanitaq Museum, which features Inuit art, starting from the prehistoric period. At the Parks Canada Visitor Centre, a park ranger gave an interesting presentation about the environment . We then went to the Town Complex to listen to a presentation on the Dene, the indigenous inhabitants of the area. After the presentation, we drove to the tundra buggy base to board a tundra buggy which took us to the Lodge, about a 90 minute drive. While driving to the Tundra Buggy Lodge, our driver, Buggy Bob, made a detour to see a mama bear with her twin 10-month old cubs. The views from the outdoor platform on our tundra buggy were magnificent. The Tundra Buggy Lodge is parked near where the bears are! It has two sleeping cars, with 20 bunks in each. They also have a lounge and Dan's Diner. After the mandatory safety briefing, we moved to the dining car for dinner. After dinner, we had evening entertainment, courtesy of mother nature! The Aurora Borealis put on a show for us! The Lodge has an observation deck above one of the vestibules. A curious bear also paid us a nighttime visit! As we started our day's excursion in the Tundra Buggy, we saw a polar bear and a flock of Ptarmigan. We were also greeted by a polar bear. In total, we saw eight different polar bears during our three days on the Tundra Buggy. Our group consisted of five people. Our guide, Ward, was excellent. In the late afternoon, once again we had a polar bear inspect the Tundra Buggy Lodge. After we watched the bear, we had a talk on polar bears. Soon it was sunset and time for dinner. The chef, his assistant, and the servers took very good care of us. Some of the polar bears got very close to our Tundra Buggy. We also saw Ptarmigan, Tundra Swans, and an Arctic Hare. After breakfast on our last day, we had a visitor. Our morning visitor delayed our departure! As our journey in the tundra buggy came to an end, we received permission to take a photo at the Tundra Buggy Base. This way you can see how big the vehicle is. (Someone was on bear patrol to make sure we were safe.) We then drove into town on a regular bus . We spent our final night in Churchill in a hotel in the town centre. As we had dinner in a restaurant next door to our hotel, the large screen television showed gorgeous Arctic wildlife photos. On Monday, we had breakfast in the same restaurant. At breakfast, our server asked if we heard the bear warning shots last night. A bear was wandering through town at 12:30 a.m.! She showed us the video one of her colleagues took. I slept through it. (We were warned not to go wandering after dinner.) We had a free morning in town. I went for a walk and browsed in a few of the shops. In the afternoon, we drove out of town to Wapusk Adventures for dog sledding. After our dog sled adventure, we drove to the airport for our flight back to Winnipeg. We had a chartered plane. There were just the six of us and a few others on the 62-seat plane, so we had plenty of room. Upon arrival, we were met and driven to our hotel. Our group met in the bar and shared a drink and some snacks before saying our farewells. The next day, we all flew out of Winnipeg, but at different times. It was an memorable tour and I was so glad to have this wonderful experience.

  • The way to see Polar Bears

This is THE way to go see polar bears in Chruchill, Canada. The entire trip is impeccably planned and the trip is suitable for guests of any age or ability. Food is fully provided at local restaurants and while not incredibly fancy, it's quite good. Same with the hotels, both in Winnipeg and in Chruchill, nothing over the top, but clean and suitable. Most importantly, the drives in the tundra buggies are fantastic. We saw 12+ bears each day, including sparring males and a mother and two cubs. The buggy is warm and spacious with plenty of viewing windows and an outdoor deck. Food/drinks are available on board, as is a bathroom. Tours around the town of Churchill are informative and you learn a lot about local culture, history, and wildlife. Dog sledding, while not a long ride, was a unique experience and a lot of fun. We were lucky enough to see the Aurora on our second night. Our guide was great; staying up to inform us if there was an aurora and knocking on doors, knowing all of the animals and history on the tundra and being good guide throughout. FN was a great operator and everything was expertly planned and executed- if you want to see polar bears, this is the way to go.

  • Bucket List Checked off - Amazing Polar Bear Trip

Overall, it was an amazing trip and very worth it to see the polar bears before they decrease in number due to global warming. We signed up for the classic polar bear trip. We arrived in Winnipeg on 10/28/2024, meeting the guide that night with some briefing. The next morning (10/29/2024), we boarded a chartered flight to Churchill, and doing a tour around the town that day. The town is very small, so basically you will be through everything in 1-2 hours, including the polar bear jail and have some free time. 10/30/2024 is the day! We are scheduled to board a tundra buggy to view polar bears. I was actually SUPER worried bear sightings would be limited because of the weather. It was reported to have strong winds, and bears typically hunker down during strong winds. However, it turns out to be an excellent day for bear sightings, and despite the strong winds, we saw 30+ bears. At one point, bears were coming from every direction, and we just lost count. One of the guides said that it was the most bear sightings in one day during his career. 10/31/2024 is a relatively laid back day, when we enjoyed our food (btw food arrangement was amazing), and listened to some presentations, visited museums. The final day, 11/1/2024, was another bear viewing day, and we saw 20+ bears, most were from a distance (so be sure to bring binoculars). It was a great trip. The only improvement point was the northern lights alert. Northern lights did come out the first night, and we were lucky enough to have seen it in front of the hotel. However, we were told that the guide would've woken us up and likely arrange a transportation to go further into the dark. That did not happen. People were not notified of the show. Another thing that could be better was that I was very excited to see the halloween celebration/kids trick or treating on the day, but again wasn't notified that it started, and we eventually missed the event. Other than that, the trip was great and we had wonderful memories.

We just returned from a trip to Churchill with Frontiers North. We are avid travelers and were super impressed with the smooth operation that this company runs. Everything from hotel stays, transfers, flights, Tundra Buggy ride to food was very well executed. JP, our Buggy 13 driver was really informative and had a keen eye to spot the bears. We're very thankful that all our wishlist items were checked on the very first day. The Buggy was super comfortable with only 18 passengers. Our tour guide, Josh was very patient and answered all our questions. He and our shuttle driver, Jamie took us to see the spectacular Northern Lights in the freezing temperatures. Thank you for making our trip memorable.

Our polar bear adventure with Frontiers North exceeded every expectation--starting with the fact that we were treated to more than twenty polar bear sightings, of at least 16 different individuals, over our two days on the tundra! We also saw ptarmigan, arctic hare, and red foxes. While animal sightings often come down to luck, almost every other wonderful aspect of our trip was only possible with the diligence, experience, and caring of everyone at Frontiers North. From our first moments on the ground in Winnipeg, we were impressed with the food and lodging choices, smooth movements between activities, and clear communication. We could not have asked for a better tour guide than Ward Cameron, who was attentive, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about these bears and their lives. And we are still talking about how skillfully Markus piloted the tundra buggy to maximize our wildlife sightings! We also loved meeting and learning from the good people at Polar Bears International who are so committed to protecting these creatures. Though we explored staying in the Tundra Buggy Lodge, we ultimately opted to stay in Churchill, and we're glad we did. We did not feel we missed out on any polar bear sightings this way. Rather, we loved experiencing a bit of life in this special place (be sure to check out the Northern Store), and our accommodation (the Aurora Inn) was clean, warm, and comfortable. I would also note that we took advantage of Frontiers North's gear rental program. Though somewhat pricey, renting a parka, snow pants, and snow boots was still a better deal for us (Californians) than buying new gear we were unlikely to wear again. Gear pickup and dropoff in Winnipeg could not have been easier.

Wow! Trip of a lifetime from start to finish! We stayed 3 nights on the tundra lodge. The accommodations, food, tundra buggy, lounge, diner, cultural presentations were all beyond our expectations. Mark, our driver, and Jason, our guide, were outstanding, knowledgeable, passionate and great story tellers with a witty sense of humor. We saw polar bears, red fox, arctic hare and amazing scenery and even the Northern Lights!! We are currently in our post-trip mode of feeling great sadness to leave but true gratefulness to have had this very special experience. We hope to return one day - this time for belugas!
