• Lovely day with Manolis

  This was the Cultural Tour of Villages out of Agios Nikolaos. We had a great day with our guide, Manolis, and his driver/friend, Dennis(sp?). Had a lovely visit to the mountainside village of Krista, starting at the top and walking, with Manolis, down alleys, steps, etc to the main square. We talked to many locals and enjoyed the great views along the way. Next we had a stop at the workshop of an amazing local artisan. This gentleman grew grapes and all kinds of vegetables, but his main interest was creating art by sculpting wood and stone, shaping metal, painting and various other ways of creating. He finished by playing songs on string instruments that he created. Extremely interesting fellow! We drove through and heard about the history of several other villages as we made our way from the mountains down to the coast. There, we enjoyed wine above a quaint marina, with a view overlooking Spinalonga island. From there we had a short drive South to Agios Nikolaos.

  This was a seriously intensive and in depth driving tour. We were thrilled with our view of Crete & Grecian culture. We started early and ended late, with our guide,Manolis and driver Nikos. By the end they were more like family. We saw both the tourist areas, but more importantly, the beautiful rural countryside. We visited an herbologist, saw neighborhoods (old and new), all detailed by our guides. We stopped when we saw something of interest: small villages, larger towns, mountains, historic passes, beautiful valleys, town squares, coffee shops, old farms. The list is long, but truly a great snd deep dive into Crete, past and present. Great tour.
