Todai-ji Temple
Nara Park

We booked this full-day tour directly with Japan Guide Agency, and we're very glad we did. The day was filled with walking around central Nara, fascinating insights and locations, and unforgettable memories (ending up at a sake tasting. Brilliant!). Our guide, Rie-san, was exceptional — knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and always mindful of our schedule, ensuring we made the most of our time. If you have the opportunity, this tour is absolutely a must-do. Highly recommended!

Rie is an absolutely delightful tour guide in Nara, combining deep knowledge of the city’s historical sites with an impressive understanding of local cuisine and sake. Her insights bring the temples and shrines to life, while her recommendations for regional specialties make the experience unforgettable. Her “other” career (or, maybe, the first one) as a professional chef, with experience in both the United States and Japan, allows her to quickly connect with guests on many different levels. Conversations flow naturally from the history and symbolism of Nara temples, to the subtle intricacies of local delicacies, to practical advice on where to find the best value at neighborhood restaurants. She even knows where to buy high‑quality sushi knives if you are inspired to make your own sashimi at home. You will have to check those in, one reason I didn't buy one. Spending a day with Rie feels less like a standard tour and more like being shown around by a knowledgeable friend who loves Nara, its food, and its culture.

The tour of Nara with Junichi was excellent! We did a full tour of the park and were able to feed the deer. He took us for a lovely picnic in the park by the lake and showed us all the best local spots including sake tasting, a traditional local house, and a samurai collection. If you are in Nara we would recommend booking a tour with Junichi!

We had the pleasure of touring Nara with Junichi today, and he was simply phenomenal from the very first moment! Warm, welcoming, and a true professional, Junichi made us feel instantly at ease. His genuine enthusiasm and excellent English made every part of the day enjoyable and easy to follow. Junichi’s knowledge is encyclopedic, yet he explains everything in such a clear, engaging, and understandable way. At Kofuku-ji Temple, he brought the history and significance of the site to life with fascinating details. We then enjoyed a relaxing lunch together before heading to Nara Park, where we had the delightful experience of feeding the famous bowing deer – such a fun and memorable moment! What really stood out was how flexible and attentive Junichi was. When we felt a bit pressed for time, he smoothly adjusted the itinerary and took us to a wonderful sake tasting facility instead of the next temple. We sampled several excellent sakes and couldn’t resist taking some home with us! From there, he led us to an incredible traditional kitchen knife shop run by an artisan whose family has been crafting blades for 750 years (originally making samurai swords). The craftsmanship was breathtaking, and we ended up purchasing a beautiful knife. Later, Junichi took us to see an original Japanese merchant’s house, which was a real eye-opener – the minimalistic lifestyle and beautiful architecture were fascinating. The entire day was perfectly paced, insightful, and filled with wonderful surprises. Junichi’s caring attitude, deep knowledge, and ability to adapt made this one of the best private tour experiences we’ve ever had. We are so grateful we got to spend the day with him. If you’re visiting Nara, do yourself a favor and book with Junichi – you won’t regret it! He’s an absolute gem. Highly, highly recommended – 5 stars without hesitation!

We learned so much from Junichi before we even left Australia. His incredible preparation pre-tour was so much appreciated. He made sure we saw everything we requested, and suggested another one which was well worth doing. He even provided the food for the deer and just as well - they actually bow their heads when they want to be fed!!! While we loved hearing all the history, feeding the deer was the highlight. If I had known we could buy some food, we would still be there feeding them! Junichi also took some incredible photos for us.
