The bell tower of St. Mark used to serve as a lighthouse for navigation with its 99 meters high. Today this imposing square tower is the prototype of all the bell towers in the Venice region. Built in the 12th century coated with copper and overlaid by a rotating platform with a statue of St. Gabriel Archangel. The 360-degree view is the greatest spectacle I’ve ever seen in Venice with a balcony built when Brazil was being colonized 500 years ago.

Seeing a relatively short queue (for Venice). We decided to take the lift to the top of the St Marks Bell Tower If you haven’t prebooked use the middle entrance to pay for a ticket with a card as this skipped the queue and we were on the next lift The views over Venice are stunning

Kiki was our tour guide and she did a great job with our tour and was very upbeat and informative but overall I would not recommend the tour as the tour operator never delivered our tickets for the tower and we were forced to pay out of pocket to go to the tower. It also forced our tour guide to be late to start our tour as she was chasing down our tickets and use time during our tour to continue chasing down our tickets which never came. We have requested a refund for the price of the tower tickets but who knows if we will even get that. It was 70 euros for a family of 5.

There are pretty much two ‘birds eye’ viewing spots in Venice - being the Basilica San Marco Clock Tower; and the roof top terrace of ‘T Fondaco Dei Tedeschi’ (a department store by the Rialto bridge). You need to book ahead for both - which we did. So we set off for the Clock Tower first thing and after a short wait, went up (~100 m). The view provided a terrific perspective of Venice - its red terracotta rooftop tiles, and the various islands to the south and east. A good start to the day.
