CRETAquarium
CretΑquarium is an expert in presenting the species and ecosystems of the Mediterranean, a sea of unique biodiversity that gave birth to ancient civilizations and welcomes millions of visitors to its shores every year from all over the world. Offering 60 tanks of different sizes, CretΑquarium is home to 2,000 sea animals representing 200 different species found in the Mediterranean basin. Together with the appropriate scenery, it successfully represents the Cretan and Mediterranean sea beds. Additionally, CretAquarium designs and implements educational programs and other innovative services, treats injured animals, and is constantly enriched with new marine species. The expertise possessed by the aquarium on the presentation of the Mediterranean species and ecosystems is backed up by the long experience of the center in Mediterranean marine research. Each visitor has the opportunity to see and be charmed by the sea inhabitants of the Mediterranean, learn, and contribute towards the ecosystem's sustainable future. At CretAquarium, the attractions become knowledge and experiences raise questions.

5.00What a lovely place. Opens at 9.30 ish. Costs 15 euros. Definitely gets very busy especially in school holidays Lots of wonderful exhibits and if you bother to take the time to read the information about the fish and mammals then you may even learn something There’s a nice little gift shop and cafe too. It’s about 3 miles from the Gouves center and there are few decent paths. Can recommend a visit

4.00Lovely aquarium with a decent array of species and was fantastic for our 2 young children they had an amazing time. Only thing I would say knocks it a bit, there’s a lack of vibrant colourful fish on display and it feels like there are quite a few repeat tanks. Very disability friendly, very kid friendly, tanks at varying heights and lots of rest spaces/toilets.

4.00So enjoyed this little visit when staying near Heraklion. There is ramp access available and everything is very mobility friendly. Very child friendly. Shark tanks and jelly fish are most impressive areas. It doesn't have wall through overhead tunnels like some other top aquariums but it gives a great experience.

3.00Ok variety of marine life, mostly native to greece with some tropical tanks of various sizes. The main viewing tank is poorly designed as shown by all the scratched noses of all the sharks bumipng into the tank walls. Its an older aquarium and definitely needs to be refurbished. Cafeteria for some snacks and light food so no need to bring anything. Most of the local travel agencies offer trips, bus + ticket, i payed 22 €. Not far from Hersonissos, so its an ok place to spend a couple of hours.

4.00We went here on a colder day in April. We weren’t alone. The line for a ticket took about 45 minutes. When you buy a ticket online you can skip the line. The aquaria were interesting and the kids were entertained for a good hour. I would not drive more than an hour for this

5.00We went here on a rainy day. Tip: book the tickets in advance, so you don't have to queue. And I can tell you it was long. In the aquarium you can see 50 different tanks with fish and coral. Nice to spend about 1 hour.

3.00Rainy day so went to kill some time, queued in the rain to get in was longer than we were in the actual aquarium. They seemed to just let everyone in at once rather than staggering people, it was so crowded in the aquarium, people pushing to see the fish. Over all quite disappointed, for what I read was one of Europe’s biggest aquariums, it was small compared to others I’ve been to. Good if you’re looking to kill an hour.

3.00Very busy on a rainy day. We arrived at 3.30 and the queue was across to the car park. My daughter who has ASD, myself (5 months pregnant) and my husband stood in the queue in the rain for 45 minutes then when finally reaching the main door we were welcomed with a sign saying people who are pregnant, have disabilities etc can skip the queue 🫠 worth noting before visiting! You can also skip the queue if you buy your tickets online. The aquarium itself was crowded and overwhelming for my daughter, it was a struggle to get a space in the tank windows for her to see, when you did you felt rushed to let the next person in because of how busy it was. Would be much better on a quieter day or if they held some ASD friendly sessions.
