Riserva di Vendicari
Suspended between history and nature, the Vendicari Nature Reserve, in Sicily, reveals its beauty through brackish ponds and coastal lands. Here, the light dance of herons, flamingos and spoonbills colors the sky, as Vendicari becomes a fundamental stop along the migratory routes of these birds. The balance between marine and terrestrial environments creates a unique habitat, enriched by sand dunes and Mediterranean vegetation. The reserve, guardian of ancient naturalistic stories, offers a spectacle of constantly evolving biodiversity. In this treasure chest of nature, human action becomes crucial for the conservation of Vendicari. The millenary history of the place is intertwined with the need to preserve the delicacy of this ecosystem, where men and nature coexist in an eternal dance of adaptation and respect.
Tonnara di Vendicari
The Tonnara di Vendicari, a legacy of ancient Rome, presents itself as an engineering masterpiece and symbol of maritime wisdom. The Romans, aware of the riches of tuna in these waters, developed the tuna fishery with refined architecture, creating a system of traps that guided the tuna. The artisanal nets, the result of Roman mastery, exploit the geometry of the nets to lead the tuna towards the fishing chambers. This methodical construction not only demonstrates engineering expertise, but also serves as a tool to concentrate tuna in a controlled position, making fishing easier. We will discover the details of this extraordinary tuna processing. From the narratives of ancient fishermen who not only built a structure, but created a sophisticated catching system. The phases of fishing, from guiding the tuna to processing, become clear, transforming the tuna fishery into a stage where history and practice blend in age-old harmony.
