Kinkakuji Temple
Kinkakuji (金閣寺, Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and according to his will it became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect after his death in 1408. Kinkakuji was the inspiration for the similarly named Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion), built by Yoshimitsu's grandson, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, on the other side of the city a few decades later. Kinkakuji is an impressive structure built overlooking a large pond, and is the only building left of Yoshimitsu's former retirement complex. It has burned down numerous times throughout its history including twice during the Onin War, a civil war that destroyed much of Kyoto; and once again more recently in 1950 when it was set on fire by a fanatic monk. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955.
Ginkakuji Temple
Ginkakuji (銀閣寺, Silver Pavilion) is a Zen temple along Kyoto's eastern mountains (Higashiyama). In 1482, shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa built his retirement villa on the grounds of today's temple, modeling it after Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), his grandfather's retirement villa at the base of Kyoto's northern mountains (Kitayama). The villa was converted into a Zen temple after Yoshimasa's death in 1490. As the retirement villa of an art obsessed shogun, Ginkakuji became a center of contemporary culture, known as the Higashiyama Culture in contrast to the Kitayama Culture of his grandfather's times. Unlike the Kitayama Culture, which remained limited to the aristocratic circles of Kyoto, the Higashiyama Culture had a broad impact on the entire country. The arts developed and refined during the time include the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, noh theater, poetry, garden design and architecture.

5.00We had a wonderful day with Bell. She was knowledgeable and very helpful. We went to amazing temples, a tea house, a neighborhood shrine. We also visited the imperial palace, had a yummy lunch, walked the philosopher’s path and stopped in temples along the way. Finished our day at another fine temple and garden.

5.00This was a fantastic experience. Kaeko was amazing, she catered for our individual choice of gardens including a late request for a change of location. We saw the quintessential Japanese gardens. She was attentive and very knowledgeable about the history and culture behind the formation of the gardens. Would highly recommend this for all garden lovers.

5.00Romi is a wonderful guide. I wanted to see some of the classic Japanese gardens in Kyoto. The whole day was superb! Romi also gives you great historical background and a very good understanding of Japanese culture

5.00Shun was an excellent tour guide. He was flexible and lovely to hang out with all day. I changed the itinerary several times throughout the day and Shun was great at accommodating our every whim. He also has a great sense of humor and taught us a lot about Japanese etiquette and history. It was a relaxing experience to have someone else plan and execute your entire day every detail was thought of even down to where we should go for lunch. 100% recommend.

1.00I didn’t go. It was scheduled for March. You emailed me and said you could not find me a guide for my tour. Now you have sent me an invoice ? I want the charge removed from my account considering you didn’t even take me in this tour.

5.00I had a wonderful day with Kuko during which I tried local foods that I had never had before. Kuko is also very nice, friendly, and of course, professional, as she is familiar with the history and locations in the city.
