Step back in time on this full-day private tour of Tomonoura, the best-preserved port town on Japan's Seto Inland Sea, with a government-licensed guide and a private vehicle. While the rest of the Hiroshima coast modernised, Tomonoura kept its Edo-period harbour almost untouched, and its streets inspired Hayao Miyazaki's film "Ponyo."
With a full eight hours and your own vehicle, you explore at a relaxed pace. Stand beside the Joyato, the 1859 stone lighthouse that symbolises the town, and wander lanes of merchant houses and shops still brewing homeishu, the local liquor. At Fukuzen-ji Temple's Taichoro hall, enjoy a sea view once praised as the finest east of Korea, and at the Irohamaru Hall hear how Sakamoto Ryoma settled Japan's first maritime insurance dispute after his ship sank nearby in 1867.

Joyato Stone Lighthouse
The Joyato is a 5.5-meter stone lighthouse built in 1859 and the enduring symbol of Tomonoura harbor. One of the largest surviving Edo-period lighthouses in Japan, it stands beside the old stone wharf where you can picture the bustling port that once welcomed ships waiting for the tide on the Seto Inland Sea.
Fukuzen-ji Temple
Fukuzenji Temple is best known for Taichoro, an Edo-period reception hall built in 1690. From its tatami rooms you look out over the Seto Inland Sea and the small islands of Bentenjima and Sensuijima, a panorama that visiting Korean envoys praised as the most beautiful scenery east of Korea.
