Fort Nieuw Amsterdam
Join us on a unique plantation tour through Commewijne, including an overnight stay at Plantation Resort Frederiksdorp. This historic district is known for the many citrus, cotton, coffee, and cocoa plantations established during the colonial period, which played a significant role in the economic development of Suriname. The tour begins with a drive across the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge, which connects Paramaribo with Commewijne. Next, we visit the Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam Open Air Museum. You will discover the rich history of this fort, which was built in 1734 by Dutch colonists to protect the surrounding plantations against attacks from the English and French. Old cannons and historic buildings still serve as reminders of this period. After the visit, we drive to Mariënburg, where we board an authentic tent boat. Via the river, we reach the resort, a former coffee and cocoa plantation that has now been transformed into an atmospheric heritage and holiday resort surrounded by nature.

Marienburg suikerfabriek
The old Mariënburg sugar factory, located in the Commewijne district, is one of Suriname's most important industrial heritage sites. The factory was part of the former Mariënburg plantation and played a significant role in the Surinamese sugar industry from the late 19th century onwards. Here, sugarcane from surrounding plantations was processed into sugar for export. Many contract laborers from India and Java worked on the plantation, making a significant contribution to the development of the area. Today, the impressive ruins of the factory can still be visited. The remains of the factory halls, railway lines, and machinery provide a unique glimpse into Suriname's industrial past. Furthermore, Mariënburg is known as an important historical site due to the workers' uprising of 1902.
