National poet, author of the epic poem OS LUSIADAS which describes Vasco da Gama’s discovery of the sea route to India. It is said the he lost one eye in a battle in Ceuta. The influence of his masterpiece is so profound that Portuguese language is sometimes called ‘language of Camões.
Bairro Alto
In the late 15th century, Lisbon was packed with people from all over the world, d PSp ue to the discovery time. There was a need of enlarging the centre and the place we know as Camões square today, used to be one of the entrances to the city. Earlier, we had the fernandine wall and the door of Santa Catarina at the place where today, after the earthquake, we have 2 churches (Encarnação and Loreto). On the other side of the wall there were areas that belonged to rich noble families and also, on the top of the hill a cemetery of the victims of black plague. In 1506 King Manuel I. requested a relic of Saint Roque from Venice and placed it in a hermitage near the cemetery. Due to the demographic increase and the arrival of the black plague in the city, the less fortunate and the sick ended up moving to this area to be closer to the church. Meanwhile, an urban plan was developed to receive these people.

5.00It was my second tour with "discovering Lisbon" and I am now convinced that these tours can give a meaning to what you see around in Lisbon everyday. I did the tour with Jade who Is studying archeology which Is a plus and when he knew about my interest in architecture made the tour mainly related to this, involving my attention despite the hot weather :P THIS TOUR IS GOOD IF YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE CITY NIGHTLIFE AND HISTORY TOO. For me It was interesting to be guided by a Brazilian guide because he could give me an "Intercontinental" point of view About portugues culture when asked. Jade is also very Happy to help you in practicing portugues and taking pictures of you in the best spots of the Town! RECOMMENDED.

5.00A very nice tour in which Mann learns a lot about Portuguese culture and gets to know the hot spots of the city. Our tour guide Leonardo was very great at explaining, friendly and explained and everything very good ! Highly recommended.

4.00Discovering the lesser known streets and the history of an area as told by our expert guides on two separate tours, Pedro and Gabriel (Alfama tour), is a great way to get a feel for Lisbon - without any fear of getting hopelessly lost! As can be expected in Lisbon, there is some climbing and descending on stairs and narrow cobble-paved streets, but the pace is easy. Good walking shoes are suggested. Meet in Rossio square daily to choose one of several tours, no prior reservations required. Pay for the tour at the end as you see fit for the quality of tour provided - no risk! Recommend.

5.00Performing the Tour with Eva was a pleasure. Besides being a lovely woman she is a great professional at her job. At all times he was watching the whole group. His explanations are a poem and what he tells and how he tells it is very enjoyable, which makes it more interesting and that you imbue yourself more with the essence of the city. Fully recommended, enjoy your company and your explanations. Cheers!!!!
