Hidden high in the mountains of central Japan, far from the hustle and bustle of metropolises like Tokyo and Osaka, lie the quaint and well-preserved townscapes of Takayama and Shirakawa-go. Once a direct land holding of the Shogun, Takayama will enthrall you with its beautiful woodwork and traditional streets that offer a more relaxed beauty than cities such as Kyoto and Kanazawa. Shirakawa-go, on the other hand, offers a great example of the village-life experienced by Japanese farmers of ages past, and still experienced today by those lucky few who call it their home. Led by a locally-based and English-speaking guide, this experience will enthrall you with visions of life in Japan during an era very different from our own.

I really enjoyed the tour with Hemi. The tour in the history of Takayama Jin‘ya was most interesting and we got a lot of background history during the walk in the old town. Also the visit to Shirakawa with the magnificent autumn leaves was very informative

Under the capable lead of our friendly and very knowledgeable guide Joshi we had a very enjoyable day, despite the rain. At Takayama Jinya we saw a glimpse of local life as a group of ladies showed off their little dogs in walking buggies. The Jinya is beautiful preserved and maintained. Joshi really helped us understand the subtle differences between areas due to hierarchy and pointed out features we may have missed. He was very open to our questions. A bonus was a group of ladies playing zither like instruments which could be heard as we walked around, adding to the atmosphere. After picking up local snacks for the bus ride we walked over the famous red bridge. Had a brief stop at the morning market before finding a little restaurant for a light lunch. The small luxury coach was a comfortable ride through stunning countryside and numerous tunnels to Shirakawa-go. Despite the crowds Joshi managed to navigate us expertly through the town, sharing his great knowledge, often delivered with great humour, so we saw everything we needed to see to get the best of the experience. It is a truly unique and beautiful place where traditions are very much a part of daily life for the local community, many of whom invite you to visit their homes. Although we couldn't go to the viewing area above the village due to a bear in the area the photo opportunities were everywhere, and Joshi knew all the best spots. This tour included everything except your food & drinks. It last all day and is really great value for money. You'll come away with a far greater appreciation of the history and skills of this beautiful part of Japan.

We booked the 1-Day Takayama Tour: Explore Scenic Takayama and Shirakawago and had an amazing time. We were lucky to be the only ones on the tour, which made it feel really personal. Our guide, Yogi, was fantastic – his English was excellent, he was very knowledgeable, and his enthusiasm for the places we visited made the day even more enjoyable. The itinerary was well paced, and both Takayama and Shirakawago were stunning. Highly recommend this tour, especially with Yogi as your guide!

We had a fantastic day with Yogi. He was extremely knowledgeable about Japanese history and the historic sites of old Takayama and Shirakawago. This is a great tour if you are short on time and want to get an insight into Japanese culture in the alps. Thoroughly recommend.

We had a very nice trip! There was lots of information provided by a guide who spoke very well. We also had many options to try some good street food and had good recommendations for restaurants. We went with our two children and it was great. The bus we had was roomy with lots of space for the stroller. They even had a car seat for my 1 year old baby
