Hidden high in the mountains of central Japan, far from the hustle and bustle of metropolises like Tokyo and Osaka, lie the quaint and well-preserved townscapes of Takayama and Shirakawa-go. Once a direct land holding of the Shogun, Takayama will enthrall you with its beautiful woodwork and traditional streets that offer a more relaxed beauty than cities such as Kyoto and Kanazawa. Shirakawa-go, on the other hand, offers a great example of the village-life experienced by Japanese farmers of ages past, and still experienced today by those lucky few who call it their home. Led by a locally-based and English-speaking guide, this experience will enthrall you with visions of life in Japan during an era very different from our own.

Harry was wonderful! I lucked out being the only person on the tour. He was very informative, knowledgeable and really took his time explaining everything. We had a great day exploring the beautiful sites!

Today we had a wonderful experience visiting the old town of Takayama and Shirakawa-go. One of the reasons the tour was so special was our guide, Harry. We didn't expect an Englishman to give the tour, but we certainly weren't disappointed with Harry. His knowledge was top-notch, and he was extremely personable. The tour was on our first day in Takayama, so we got acquainted with the city, and particularly the Old Town. Harry pointed out places of interest and several little gems about the place. We then took a very comfortable van ride to Shirakawa-go. Though the small town is very touristy, we enjoyed it for sure. The setting is incredible, and again, Harry was well-versed in the history and ways of life in the village. Over it was an enjoyable day and highly recommended.

We really enjoyed this one-day tour with our native English-speaking guide, Harry. Harry is knowledgeable about the places we visited as well as Japanese culture, and offered us suggestions on the best places for photographs. We liked that we had some “free” time to explore on our own. This tour was well worth it.

Starting with an in-depth visit of the office hall (Takayama Jinya), we explored the main highlights of Takayama, including a lovely sake tour in the old town (Sanmachi Suji). Then, we headed to Shirakawa-go via a private shuttle bus. While walking through the village and enjoying a glimpse of the surrounding nature, we have visited the historic farmhouse of the Nagase family. Our tour guide, Harry, proved to be very knowledgeable, genuinely passionate about local and national history, which he shared with us throughout the tour. The driver also deserves a mention, as it was excellent and the travel very smooth. Thanks also to the limited number of people (4), the tour was always interactive and the overall pace balanced, allowing enough free time. All in all, the one-day tour was a great experience. We can only but highly recommend it, and Harry.

We learned that Japan does not have a certified guide credential so basically anyone can be a guide if they know the basics of the language you need. We have done 3 tours in Japan and they have been subpar compared to guides we have had in Europe, Peru, Equador and Croatia. Our guide for Shirakawa-go was very nice but everything she told us she said she learned on her own. There were way more history and facts about the area than we wanted to know. We left feeling unsatisfied. If you enjoy history you will want to research your guides otherwise you may only get very limited information.

We have a splendid day today. Blessed with lovely weather and our excellent guide, Harry, was thorough & clear in explaining the best places to get the street food and best souvenir shop. Plus, giving historical background of the various places that was most fascinating. Highly recommend this tour. Our gratitude and compliments to Harry for making it a memorable experience today.
