Herdla Fortress

Herdla Museum is on the northern tip of Askøy. Housed in a modern building with panoramic views of Herdla Fort, the museum explores the island’s unique history and natural environment. Its main attraction is the "Gul-16," a German fighter plane from World War II that crashed in 1943 and was recovered from the sea 64 years later. Exhibits also cover the island’s role as a German airbase during the war, its Cold War-era torpedo battery, and its rich birdlife, making it a blend of military history and nature. The museum serves as a gateway to explore Herdla’s trails, bird reserves, and wartime remnants, offering a compact yet engaging experience.

Herdla

Herdla Flyplass was a military airfield located on Herdla, an island northwest of Bergen, Norway. Built by German forces during World War II, it served as a strategic Luftwaffe base. After the war, the Norwegian Air Force used it for military operations until it was decommissioned. Today, the area is a nature reserve and a historical site, with remnants of the airfield still visible.
