My friends and I took the Jonestown remembrance tour, and had a great experience. Chris is an absolutely outstanding guide. His expertise and great personality made for a very enjoyable trip. The tour was tastefully done, and definitely exceeded expectations. I highly recommend this tour, and company. Between Chris and Roselyn, it made for an excellent experience.

  • Emphasis on "Memorial," the way it should be

My headline says it all: The Jonestown Memorial Tour, operated by Wanderlust Adventures GY, truly puts the emphasis on "Memorial." If you're considering making the trek here, then you probably have a personal interest in Jonestown as my fellow traveller and I did, and that's really who this tour is aimed at: People who are on a personal journey to reckon with and better understand the events and tragedy that took place at Jonestown, and/or to pay respect to the lives lost there. You'll start in Georgetown, flying from Eugene Correia Airport on a tiny "paper plane" as my wife calls them (don't worry, you'll be safe), landing at Port Kaituma airstrip, the very airstrip where Congressman Leo Ryan and four others were tragically murdered by the People's Temple. You'll then get a tour of Port Kaituma, which is a wonder in itself, as it is a mining community with no ground connection to Georgetown or anywhere else - it's completely isolated in the jungle, accessible only by air or boat. You'll have lunch, and then visit the ruins of Jonestown itself. Now the good folks at Wanderlust like to downplay what you'll see, as it's just ruins at this point, but don't let them fool you - what remains is incredible. Also the sign and the memorial are powerful, emotional stops you'll make. If you're lucky, you'll have Chris as your guide, who will expertly paint a picture of what life was like in Jonestown and take you through Jim Jones' descent into madness, culminating in the infamous mass suicide that Jonestown is now known for. Afterward, you'll head back to Port Kaituma, where if you're lucky, you'll meet some residents who were not members of the People's Temple, but who visited Jonestown back in the day. The next morning, you'll formally visit the Port Kaituma airstrip before the planes start coming in, where your guide will take you to the spot where the assassination occurred. While I was completely blown away by this tour, it is not for everyone. You must make your peace that you are venturing into the wild, and there is not a Sandals resort to kick back at at the end of the day. But I figure the Sandals crowd isn't coming here anyway. So if you want a world-class, first-rate, front-row-seat to Jonestown, then Wanderlust doesn't disappoint.

  • Wanderlust Adventures GY for the WIN!

I was really impressed with Wanderlust Adventures GY, from Day 1 when I started planning my trip a few months ago. Roselyn was responsive, detail-oriented, open to my suggestions while offering her own advice, and generally extremely professional, warm and efficient in all that she planned for me--and I did a lot! From the 3 days in Wichabai (Lethem) to see anteaters and enjoy ranch life, to Georgetown where I did cultural tours and sampled a lot of great restaurants, to the emotional Jonestown Memorial Tour, to the grand finale of Kaieteur and Orinduik falls, my trip to Guyana was surprising, enjoyable, relaxing, and PROBLEM-FREE! Roselyn works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly--which is not to be taken for granted in ANY country. This was very special, but she had also done research on her clients--she knew a lot about me, and the driver who picked me up, Renaldo, did too. I was flattered and touched that they went the extra mile to note things about me that I might enjoy or want to do while here, all because they did that extra research before I arrived. This personal touch is rare, and I really felt appreciated--while I was a guest and a tourist, I ended my tour feeling like a friend of the family--Roselyn and her team are that special. Extra special thanks to Chris Persaud, our knowledgeable and excellent guide for Jonestown as well as a sunset boat tour. I highly recommend coming to Guyana and using Wanderlust Adventures GY, you will be impressed with the service and personal touch!

  • An intense and moving experience, but it's not for everybody

This is a very intense tour and it's not for everybody. But if you're into history (and understand that this site is filled with grief, loss and pain), this tour is amazing. Chris, our super-friendly guide, really knows a lot about this tragedy and he shares his knowledge with a lot of passion. He also answers honestly the tougher questions about it. This tour requires a certain level of maturity because it deals with some very serious matters. This is not a light-hearted activity for, let's say, a party-seeking backpacker, so be aware of what you're getting into before signing in. It's a powerful experience, but it can be challenging. The tour was well-organized and everything went smoothly, as expected. The organization was efficient, yet it left some room to accommodate unplanned events. It was also interesting to visit the low-key city of Port Kaituma and witness its surprisingly bustling nightlife, even on weekdays. A few notes: 1) I guess the hotel could be seen as rundown, but I enjoyed its charm. 2) The heat and humidity can be crushing in the area. 3) it's imperative you follow the instructions about what to wear, as walking in a dense jungle can cause discomfort or even injuries. 4) a good grasp of English really improves the quality of this experience, as it's the local language. 5) there is not a lot to see; it's more about what you can learn. Finally, some might balk at the tour price, but you have to remember all that's included (transportation by plane and van, hotel night, meals, services of a guide, etc.). In the end, you will not remember the money, you will remember the strong emotions that this tour will no doubt stir in you. Wanderlust Adventures GY is an excellent travel agency, so check out its other tours.

Eerie and dark place, with strong history. Definitely emotional! Thats all I will say to the tour. You gotta go yourself to experience it. But the Wanderlust is something else. Professionals with passion for their work. Especially Chris (he does this tour) is a really great tour guide. Literally one of the best I have met and I met a lot of guides during my life.

The Jonestown Memorial/Port Kaituma tours were excellent. Learning the tragedy of Jonestown from a historical perspective, while also memorializing the 900+ lives was informative and humbling. The local village of Port Kaituma was enjoyable, meeting friendly people and trying various foods. Chris was an exceptional guide, easily the best I've met throughout my world travels.

Chis of Wanderlust Adventures did an amazing job taking myself and a friend to Port Kaituma and Jonestown. There is so so much to learn about the history of Jonestown. It was very humbling to walk where history took place and to meet locals that had interactions with the people of Jonestown. Port Kaituma and the surrounding mining areas are simple but a very nice break from being in the big city of Georgetown. Loved my visit and certainly will be telling others about Wanderlust Adventures.

I have been fascinated by the People's Temple since the terrible happening in Jonestown back in 1978. When I recently googled Jonestown, I came across Wanderlust Adventures' tour to this place. I was lucky enough to join their first official tour. An unforgettable experience which gives you the possibility to reflect over what happened in a very respectful way. We had an excellent guide in Chris, we had wonderful support from the Wanderlust Team, we met a witness who lived outside Jonestown in 1978, and we experienced the fascinating little town Port Kaituma. I cannot recommend this tour enough for the person who wants to learn more about what happened!
