The drive to song kul was highly adventurous, but super feasible with our excellent guide zamir. The scenery passing by was breathtaking and the car we started our journey in was very comfortable. Zamir was very attentive to us and prepared for all eventualities (rain ponchos, thermal underwear, seat sets, blankets, pillows, warm socks, etc.). The dunganese cuisine that zamir took us to was the best restaurant we could taste on our entire trip. The song kul itself is very cold but the environment has enchanted us. The traditional sleeping in a yurt was a great experience. The spontaneous dance celebration initiated by our guide was a goosebumpy moment of our trip.

A magical trip through Son Kol with our wonderful guide Zamir - he spoke perfect English and made sure I was comfortable at all times including offering us drinks, giving us chocolate, chairs to sit on instead of the grass etc. Zamir really cares about his guests and would really recommend this tour to you!

This is the kind of trip you will remember the rest of your life. You will experience Kyrgyzstan in it's most pure form. My guide Zamir picked me up at my hotel in Bishkek. I already did another tour with him so I knew he speaks perfect English. Zamir is a true patriot and ambassador for his country. It took some hours to drive to Son Kul, but the views are stunning. Near Son Kul we had a perfect lunch with local food, that was prepared by the family who ownes te horses. The food was delicious. The family really made me feel at home. After Lunch we drove to the pick-up point for our horses. Then the adventure really started. We were guided by a local horse guide and of course Zamir. Driving a horse is what he loves to do most, besides fishing. You will go up the mountain, passing rivers and fields full with horses, cows and sheep. You will pass the summit at 3400 meter altitude. Best if you put on a jacket. At the summit you will see the magnificent Son Kul lake. At Son kul lake you will stay in a traditional yurt. Basic conditions? Yes, but that is what you expect. You will mix up with other tourists and of course the horse guides. We played some ball games and had diner. It gets dark soon, so we spent our night in our yurt drinking wodka. So I didn't feel cold during the night, also because we kept our clothes on. The next morning we had breakfast and rode back on our horses. Riding downhill (it's very steep at the top of the mountain) scared me a bit more than uphill, but you are well guided. Because I'm a tall guy and not very experienced with horses the horse guide guided my horse all the way up and down the mountain. Why choose this trip: - You will be sure to have an English speaking guide. The local horse guides don't speak English (or very little). Some speak a litte Russian. - The tour starts and ends at your hotel (or other point of your choosing) in Bishkek. So no worries about transportation. - You will get a true insight in nomadic life in Kyrgyzstan. - You will see landscapes that you have never seen before. - the guides will help you if you're not experienced with riding horses. Last tip: I would recommend to do this trip to Son Kul somewhere near the end of your stay in Kyrgyzstan. Because this is something so impressive.

Zamir served as an effective advisor for this trip. While the other tourists on the trip navigated it alone, I had someone to help translate, troubleshoot, and advocate for what I wanted. I wanted to make my horse run which is not something the guides typically allowed. Zamir helped negotiate this for me. The guides who take you to the lake are local and don’t speak English very well, if at all. They spoke Kyrgyz and Russian. When another traveler got separated due to a sick horse, it was Zamir who stepped to help him get back to the village safely. He didn’t just guide - he made the experience better, even rallying everyone around a bonfire that turned out to be a highlight for the group.

If you take a ride in Kyrgyzstan you can not miss an experience on horseback. We did 3 days in the company of Aziz who accompanied us through these fabulous mountains, as well as making us live some unforgettable adventures on horseback in the company of other local guides. A fairly spartan trip, but absolutely feasible for every healthy person.
