  • A too long journey (18/19 Nov) with a bad guide

1100 Km in two days, to see El Jem (OK), The traditional home et Matmata OK but couldn't lose the feeling that it wasn't genuine. Star Wars site: (A farce) luckely we had lunch there. Camel ride: OK for those who did it. diner in the desert: I expected a Berber camp but it looked more like a refugee camp. Unfortunatly for us and the organisers it rained and the diner had to take place in the cooking tent. Three hours waiting to get a poor diner and then back to the hotel. For some of the group who booked a staying in the camp it wasn't a good night because it rained in the tents. The staying in the hotel was OK. The second day we went to see the salt lake Sjot el Djerid (disappointment) most of the lake was brown of the sand above the salt. Tozeur: the Medina was not worth visiting and the guide spent more time talking with inhabitants and let us wait. and losing time to visit more of Tozeur. The Chebika Oasis was OK but not enough time to enjoy this beautiful site. The second oasis Tamaghza, we only saw from above. Although it was told we could vist and even swim there, we only saw it from a great distance and the guide wouldn't get near. And now about the guide, it seemed that it was more of a burden for him, gave his explanation in the bus (no mike) with his face to the front so we couldn't undertstand him. He was more interested in talking to the local people than giving a good guide tour. At one moment in Tozeur he disappeared to get his newspaper and we lost time waiting for him, even de driver wasn't pleased about that. Talking about the driver, he did a good job and was awarded for that.

We took advantage of our stay in Tunisia (6 days) to make this 2-day excursion to discover the country, visit and make new experiences. If you want to leave with memories, memorable experiences, and discover the country go ahead and book your excursion! My companion was rather hesitant because 1400 km over 2 days is still a lot but no regrets and to do again! You can't see time going by. The excursion is tied up perfectly on both days so that we can discover the maximum and enjoy every moment. It was faithful to the program announced, we were able to do camel 🐫 at sunset, quad biking (it's extra as specified no unpleasant surprise and frankly it's really worth it!), we slept in the desert in tents, it was comfortable and we didn't get cold. Every time we ate very well. The visit to cave houses and oases was beautiful... (I would have liked to stay longer at Chebika Oasis). Incredible scenery, rocks , the Sahara desert and its immensity, palm trees ... (I wish we could stop sometimes to take pictures especially in the scenery towards oases, when it looks like Colorado...I didn't dare ask that we stop to take a photo...it was so beautiful...but at the same time if you want to be able to do everything, you should not hang out too much en route).I didn't imagine Tunisia with so many different landscapes and very welcoming people. El djem and its very well preserved Coliseum. Above all, we were fortunate to have an outstanding guide, very cultured, nice and funny, with in-depth knowledge of history, geography and literature. It was very rewarding. (I hope you have Khaled to guide you). Not to mention our super driver who has an excellent drive, on whom we could rely with confidence throughout our stay (thank you Youssef) The vehicle was comfortable and clean. The timing was respected and we took breaks regularly. You still hesitate!? Book now you will not regret it! We came home two days ago, and our hearts and heads are still there...the memories will be etched forever. Thanks. Marylin & Olivier

Honestly one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had, both my wife and myself had an incredible time. Yes there is a lot of driving involved but thats more than made up for by the experiences. We enjoyed every minute and whilst on the drive you get to see some beautiful scenery. Probably the best value for money I've ever experienced, I honestly can't recommend this trip enough.

This visit to the Sahara is unforgettable. A rewarding life experience, getting to know the Berber people and the Bedouins, in the middle of the desert, is what much loved. Our visit had good and bad moves. I went with my son, a young adult. The pickup from our hotel in Hammamet was appreciated. We did not have a concrete plan of activities for each day, it would be desirable to have a review of the activities of the day at the beginning, to be better prepared, because the days are plain and we have to manage our energy resources well. The first day was great. The trip on the highway was good, with stops often, to breathe and take fresh water. The amphitheatre D'el Jem, much better preserved than the one in Rome, took our breath away. We had time to go around and buy a lemonade and coffee. The stop in Matmata was a disappointment for me personally. I would have liked more the simple decor, without the plastic and the 'kitsch' additions. The meal was good, not excellent (a brick, couscous and watermelon). My favorite was, no doubt, the visit to the Berbers of Tamazret. Their simple and peaceful life, their calm and old habits, which are very similar to those of my ancestors, miles away and unrelated, have been for me the image of paradise. We served tea with the family and had time to talk. I give this experience five stars. We continued afterwards with our stop and break in Douz, in a hotel. The pool water was green, so we took the shower next to the pool and relaxed for a while. We left the hotel to go to the desert, for the camel ride at sunset. The camels seemed higher:), but, I survived well. Very different from the city in a metropolis, this experience brings us closer to the sky, nature, plants, animals and, not lastly, humans. All our guides knew French, so the conversation was easy, even with the owner of the camels, the Berbers or the Bedouins (some Bedouins, on the other hand, were more proficient in English). At the suggestion of our guide, we chose to sleep in a tent in the desert, and it was beautiful. The dinner was excellent, with Tunisian salad, couscous and watermelon. The starry sky was beautiful. The many beetles all around us frightened us at first. But with the fatigue of the day, we fell asleep quickly. We put our luggage in our beds and it reduced our sleeping space. A small chair next door will be a great idea. The second day started at 4:00. No water for our grooming, except what we brought in bottles bought on the road. But we were promised access to water on the way. Still no explanation of the day, which left us helpless. We started with a visit to a heat exchanger for the borehole water that feeds a beautiful palm oasis. I took the opportunity to use that water to wash. However, my friends have been reluctant to do so. I was relieved to be able to wash after the heat we endured in the desert in July. We continued with the beautiful oasis and the souk of Chebika. We changed our guide because of local regulations, but we were very disappointed with the local guide, who wanted to get rid of us as quickly as possible. The places are by far the most impressive of the whole visit and we raced them. That's a shame. We continued with the great salt lake, Chot El Jerid, which was almost dry, but we saw the accumulations of salt on the surface of the earth. A short stop was beneficial to us, to move a little and to buy souvenirs. We continued with the Tamaghza oasis, which did not touch us. It is true that we come from Canada, the land of Niagara Falls, and the small stream that forms a kind of falls was less appreciated by our group. The water was green, I think, because of the algae. We only admired the scenery to give us more time during dinner. The dinner, a few minutes from the falls, on the terrace of a small local restaurant, was delicious. Then we went on the road, for long hours. A stop in Kairouan, considered the fourth holiest city in Islam (after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem), even without visiting the mosque, was a good idea. I bought a beautiful local watercolor painting and got lost in the local market, to buy hot bread at 1 dinar, bread that was excellent. Afterwards, I remember only long and painful hours on the road, in extreme heat, in the jeep that could no longer air condition. It was desirable to have stops every 1h30, as the road was difficult. Our stops were every 2-3 hours, which made the road difficult to bear, in the jeep. This is the least loved part of the tour. We arrived at our hotel around 6:30 pm, after 1240 km, done in 2 days. Ali, our guide, gave us a lot of information, very relevant and very appreciated. He guided us well and also told us about his experience as a Bedouin. Apart a good plan every morning, which we missed, the visit was excellent. Thank you, Ali, we have great memories! A little word about our new friends who did the activity with us. They were great, two young Greeks (a young family), very nice. We had a great time with them, we communicated well and the event was a success also thanks to them. In conclusion, I highly recommend this 2-day tour of the Sahara, which will change your view of the world. Be open for an unforgettable experience, but considerable effort on the road. Pleasure, Camélia

This was the absolute best trip I've ever experienced! From the moment we met our guide and driver to making new friends with the others on the tour, everything was incredible. We had a ton of fun driving through the desert and stopping to see epic historical places. Our guide was one of the friendliest people I've ever met and nothing was ever forced on us, and both our guide and driver went above and beyond to make this an unforgettable experience. If you're open minded and friendly, they will make sure you have the most memorable trip of your life. Some of the highlights for me were quad biking, camel riding, exploring the oasis towns, learning about Tunisian culture and history, visiting the colosseum, and especially sitting around a fire in the Sahara desert with my new friends. One detail that really stood out was how everything was catered to us. I was very surprised that camping in the Sahara was even an option, and we obviously chose that over staying in a hotel. What made it even better was that each family had their own private tent. In conclusion, this tour was worth far more than what we paid. I would 100% recommend it to anyone thinking about visiting the Sahara.

The bus rides are strenuous and long but at least you travel most of Tunisia. The bus was not very comfortable (buckles poke in the bottom and the climate did not work properly). Furthermore, due to a defect, we stood for 3 hours at a gas station. The jeeps were better, but also only air circulation through open windows. The quads are also not in good condition, but all this was fine as we knew what country we were in and what to expect. Therefore not a bad review here, just as information. All the restaurants (bus driver, quad guide, Bedouin, oasis guide, food service...) were very friendly and did their best to make our excursions as attractive as possible. Now for the most unpleasant and worst part of the tour: Our guide was very uninterested in teaching us information about country and people. Only on request was we bored explained what the next stop is. However, this could hardly be understood because the microphone on the bus did not work. We were simply told nothing on the hour-long drive. Even if we got off the bus it was only said how long you have to take photos, Our guide then always went into a coffee and waited until we got back on the bus. So for the tour itself there are 5 stars. The guide was completely redundant, the bus driver would have been enough for us.

Absolutely disappointing performed by Caravan du Sahara! We are totally incomprehensible how this company (purchased) good reviews? Absolutely unprofessional execution of the 2 day Sahara tour. At first, the guests had to drive from,Hammamet 1 hour to Sousse to pick up guests there. Then on the first evening the guests who had booked a hotel were simply taken to a private house, there was no heating, only cold water and it was slept on the floor on mattresses. The other participants slept at the desert camp. The staff there were very friendly and helpful. On the 2nd day the time organization was so chaotic that they drove to Dousse right after lunch (9 hrs on the bus) Kairouan was simply cancelled without any writere explanation! Dan the guests were brought back from Sousse (which were picked up last) ... Then further back to Hammamet we arrived at 23:30, all 8 guests missed dinner at the hotel. The chaotic timing was NOT due to traffic jams or unforeseen causes but EXCLUSIVELY to the Bad Organization of Caravan du Sahara. There was no answer to my What's app regarding refund or feedback as the tour was not done as booked. I advise everyone to book from there.

Then nothing goes with them, the guide does not translate, he does not speak any language quoted in their descriptions. He charges us the entrance to the Coliseum in El Jem that is 10 dinars per person saying that they will refund us once we arrive in Douz except that we have had no refund. In the desert there is no animation, it's just tents, have nothing with what's in the description. If the sun is already set when you arrive don't go there it's a scam. For the quad and the camel 🐫, in the description it is well noted that it is extra and that it is 10€ / person on the camel and 30€ on the quad except that arrived on the spot it doubles the price it was a horror. They tell you 1 hour of quad but you'll make that 15min mdr a scam their thing don't go they'll get you money and then take a commission from the seller. To finish the waterfall it's a joke you can't swim, the guide is too rushed and it's done in 5 min - 10 min max. It has nothing to do with the waterfall described on their page, nothing matches the images. A council took the excursion with the agency of your hotel or with your travel agency. You will have a real guide and you will do the activities as described. The only positive was our driver who was too kind and very protective. Thank you, sir, if you ever pass by. He's a tall, old man with a beard and gray hair. He is the only one who speaks fluent French because he lived in Paris. The others are useless and are very vicious and dishonest.
