In traditional Bedouin communities, children learned to ride before they could walk and horses were considered an essential part of life. As the world turns to computers and cars, a dedicated family of Bedouin horsemen are working hard to keep their traditions alive.

Mountain Horse Stables is home to award winning marathon (endurance) horses as well as many rescued happy trail horses. In addition to training and breeding, the stable does on-site equine rehabilitation. Our rehabilitated horses are returned to their (now educated) owners or kept to lead a life of pampered luxury as one of our trail horses.

We are licensed by the Petra Development and Tourism Authority and local Bedouin owned and operated.

After a short orientation and fitting helmets, you will meet your horses and ride out from Mountain Horse Stables towards Little Petra and the Jordan Trail. Explore the backroads of Little Petra while getting a closer look at a few of the Popular Bedouin Camps (glamping) as we pass. After a few kilometers we will cross the main road towards the UNESCO Little Petra site. Riding along you will be able to see Nabatean carved water channels and steps. Optional stops at the Neolithic Village and the Little Petra archaeological sites. Return to Mountain Horse Stables tired and happy. Horse riding is an inherently risky activity. Mountain Horse Stables provides safety equipment and experienced guides as is standard in the industry. All riders will be required to sign a liability waiver. Rides will be adapted to the experience level of the riders. Horses and riders will be matched to ensure the safety of both. For everyone's safety, only one person is permitted per horse. Children may not be carried by adults on horseback. Non-riders are welcome to enjoy the hospitality of the stable while their party is out riding.

We lived an unforgettable moment, a magnificent horseback ride in the Petra desert! Joel and Wendy are passionate and in love with Jordan and their horses, on top of that they are so kind! We also had the chance to meet Abid, who has been working with Joel and Wendy since the beginning, a man just as in love with horses. In addition to having lived an exceptional moment we met extraordinary people! Thank you for this moment! Hoping to cross your path one day. Ophelia & Florent

Went there for a trail ride with my two daughters who are visiting from the US for the holidays. We went on a three hour trail ride and we had a wonderful experience. The girls, who are experienced riders, had a blast. It is better to discuss your skill level with the guide before planning your trip. My youngest daughter’s horse was abnoxious, so the guide switched horses with her and she rode a beautiful Arabian! She was extremely happy. The guide Dirrar was superb and the entire experience was mesmerizing! We agreed to come back in the Spring for the Wadi Musa to Wadi Rum six day trail.

Hands down the best experience in Petra. It couldn’t have been better. The horses were great and the hospitality made us leave feeling so in awe of how lovely Jordanian people are. I would spend everyday at Mountain Horse Stables if I could and it’s clear how loved and cared for the horses are. 100% recommend!!
