Explore the Danakil from the Afar capital Semera (590km from Addis Ababa) with the Ethiopian Airlines Daily flight.
The Danakil is a genuine expedition destination. Although a good 350km road now runs from Semera to Mekelle via Afdera, the tracks to Dallol and Do Dom (for Erta Ale) require 4×4 and navigational skills. The region is best visited with an experienced operator using a minimum of two 4x4s, and experienced staff who know the local Afar. Helicopter access is from Mekele.
Currently, we offer tours directly out of Semera. The minimum time required for a full tour is two nights, spending one at Hamed Ela and one on the rim of Erta Ale. An extra night at Erta Ale is recommended if you want to see the crater by day, and another for Lake Afdera.

You will meet upon arrival at Semera airport and drive to Ahmed Ella visiting beautiful landscape of solidified lava, rock, sand and occasional palm lined oasis after you pass several small hamlets start visiting Ahmad Ella village total population of more than 500 people to see the life style of the local Afar people. after breakfast we will drive to Dallol visit the difference landscape formed by volcanic activity (125 meter below sea level, one of the lowest and hottest places in the world) colorful salts mining and different terrestrial places formed by volcanic activity like bubbling oily lake creates a different experience of your trip. Then we back to Ahmad Ella for lunch then proceed to Ertale. We spend the night watching the dramatic action of the boiling lava. Ertale ranks one of the most alluring and physically challenging natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia. It is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and 1km square caldera at its summit. Ertale contains the world’s only permanent lava lake. Ertale is 613 meters, with a lava lake, one of only five in the world, at the summit. It is notable for being the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century.

After Breakfast we will drive to Afdera it is used for salt extraction. It is named after the saline Lake Afdera, located in the southern part of the Afar Depression. It is a major source of salt extraction in Ethiopia, where the Lake water is pumped to saltpans for solar evaporation. After lunch we will continue the trip to Semera airport your flight to Addis Ababa.

5.00Just returned from the most incredible 3-day Danakil Depression tour and I cannot recommend this experience highly enough! From start to finish, everything was perfectly organized and absolutely unforgettable. Jonas, our guide, was absolutely fantastic - not only incredibly knowledgeable about the region but also genuinely funny and entertaining throughout the entire journey. His humor and insights made every moment enjoyable, and you could tell he's truly passionate about sharing this amazing place with visitors. Our driver Berhane deserves special recognition - hands down the best driver I've ever traveled with! His skill behind the wheel was remarkable, and we consistently arrived at each destination ahead of other groups, giving us more time to explore and enjoy the sites without feeling rushed. The scenery is absolutely otherworldly - I'm not exaggerating when I say it looks like you've been transported to another planet! The colors, formations, and sheer uniqueness of the Danakil Depression are stunning beyond words. Every turn revealed something more spectacular than the last. Excellent Food & Logistics: The meals throughout the tour were surprisingly excellent - fresh, flavorful, and perfectly suited for the adventure. No complaints whatsoever about the quality or variety. We shared the tour with other travelers (some doing slightly different itineraries), which added a wonderful social element to the evenings. It was fantastic meeting fellow adventurers and sharing stories around camp - really enhanced the overall experience. I felt completely safe throughout the entire journey. The team clearly prioritizes safety while ensuring you don't miss any of the incredible sights. The pacing was perfect - never rushed, with plenty of time to really soak in each location and take it all in properly. The accommodations were basic sleeping arrangements outdoors, which was exactly what I was hoping for! This is adventure travel at its finest - authentic, raw, and completely immersive. If you're looking for luxury hotels, this isn't for you, but if you want a genuine adventure experience, this is perfect. Book this tour - you won't regret it for a second!

5.00Excellent service, superb food and atention. The whole trip was well organized and with very good hotel, guide and picnic food (one of the best we saw). Yihun did a great job and was always ready to do what ever we need. Just to mention jeep should be a little bit updated ( nothing important just to mention it)

5.00Overall, it was a pleasant journey, especially because of the nice cost and the good quality of the resorts and camp! But still, some aspects for improvement e.g. inadequate information of guide are sent to us only one day advanced after repeatedly urge. Moreover, we choosed minivan but it seemed to old, the tire and battery of the Van both failed in the road, we waste many times to fix it up. In all, the journey of Tigray Tours but the other trip arrangements was ok！

Joseph, the guide, was brilliant in explaining background information to the sites, but what made him special was his insight and explanation on another Ethiopian way of life. The food was excellent typical Ethiopian food and we laughed great with the driver and the guide.

5.00I like the whole trip, 3 days Danakil trip is definitely enough for me. I don't see there is a reason to have a longer trip. We are quite lucky to see all the active lava volcano & and the beautiful color parts of Dallol The all arrangements were really great but don't expect too much on the lunch side.
