It is likely that you will be joined by other visitors. The gorilla trek can take from a few to many hours depending on how far the gorillas are inside the forest.

This was a vacation of a lifetime. Edison at Bamboo Encounters was very easy to work with and helped structure a trip to our specifications. He was always timely in his email responses and he took care of all the planning and permits we needed. Every lodge we visited was top notch. Chance our guide was the real star. He drove us over every inch of Uganda (and some Rwanda) over some crazy roads. He could answer every question we had even silly ones and his knowledge of birds is second to none. He knew every bird by sight and sound. The trip itself was spectacular. We saw gorillas and the Silverback literally walked right past us within inches of touching us. We went on the Kazunga Channel where we saw elephants playing in the water and chasing birds which was a sight to see. We also found the tree climbing lions in Queen Victoria and a host of other animals. We visited Bigodi and had a great experience walking in the community and learning how people live and work. Finally we visited the chimps and to our luck they were all in the ground playing and hanging out. All in all a great experience. A few tips: if coming overseas especially US bring clean money. By that I mean not torn or with ink on it and later than 2007. The locals get a bad exchange rate on money with flaws and may refuse the bill. Get in shape for the hikes in the forests. While they are not hard, you will be walking for hours in forest terrain… get off that couch and get on the treadmill. Try to enjoy the journey as you travel between spots. There’s a lot to see just looking out the window like 5 people on a motorcycle or just people going about their day that you won’t encounter at home.

We can only recommend Bamboo Ecotours as travel agency. Initial contact was very fast and easy. During the booking process we felt well guided by Edison who assured our trust in the payment procedure. The basic rate is still comfortable with own toilet/bathroom in every accommodation. They provided good and mostly organic food. We enjoyed, that as part of our private tour we could adjust the travel route to our preferences (e.g. Pick-up in Kigali, drop-off in Kampala). We will never forget the Gorilla trekking and Chimp trekking! You should not miss an overnight stay at lake Bunyonyi. A special recommendation goes to our driver, Jackson, on whom we could not only rely 100 % but who was also the source of cultural and historical insights on Uganda and who - through his clever and intelligent personality - made longer car trips a very pleasant experience. If you can, pick him!

It was really easy to discuss the tour with Edison in advance. He always answered our questions quickly and very competently. In Uganda we were picked up by Amanya. He guided us safely and competently through Uganda and was very accommodating. The journey through Uganda remains unforgettable! We can recommend a tour with Bamboo Ecotours to everyone!

From the first contact, planning, payment and the trip itself: I was highly impressed with the professionalism of both Edison online and Godfrey as our guide and driver. They managed to accommodate all our preferences and went out of their way to make our trip a great succes. Aside from the unique experiences during the trip itself such as seeing gorillas and chimpanzees up close for the first time, I also thought that the lodges Edison booked for us were exceptional. Godfrey was a very patient guide and driver, answering all the (many!) questions we had to also improve our understanding on Ugandan culture. All in all, a big recommendation to reach out to Bamboo ecotours for tourism in Uganda! For those wanting to learn more about what the gorilla and chimpanzee treks are like: Trekking for gorillas in Bwindi is a bit of a mass tourism experience because it attracts so many people even during Covid, however it was still special to see them up close. I would personally recommend doing the 4 hour chimpanzee habituation in stead of the 1 hour trek if you plan to go to Kibale for chimpanzees, because you get to spend 4 hours without a large group and with a very knowledgeable guide (mine knew and exchanged research with Jane Goodall), which was really a highlight of my trip. If you’re into wildlife conservation and learning more about the forest and all it’s inhabitants it’s a good investment of the extra $100, as the 1 hour chimp or gorilla trek might leave you longing for more information, time for animal observation or quiet time in nature.
