The Inca Trail 4-day trek is a famous hiking route in Peru that leads to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. The trail covers approximately 42 kilometers (26 miles) and takes four days to complete. The trek passes through different terrains, including high-altitude mountains, cloud forests, and subtropical jungles.
The journey begins on km 82 and follows an ancient Inca road, passing through several archaeological sites, including the ruins of Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, and Wiñaywana. Along the trail, hikers can enjoy breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains and the surrounding valleys.
During the trek, hikers will climb to the highest point of the trail, known as Dead Woman's Pass, which reaches an altitude of 4,215 meters (13,828 feet). On the final day of the trek, hikers walk to the Sun Gate, the entrance to the Machu Picchu Inca citadel, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the site and surrounding mountains.

Inca Trail
Day 1 of the Inca Trail trek begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Cusco, followed by a scenic drive through the Urubamba Valley to the starting point of the trek at Kilometer 82. After crossing the Vilcanota River, hikers will begin their journey along the ancient trail that winds through the stunning Andean landscape. Along the way, you will pass through Huayllabamba, with the opportunity to interact with local people. The first day's trek covers a distance of approximately 7.5 miles (12 kilometers), with a moderate level of difficulty. The trail follows the banks of the Urubamba River, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. You will reach the Llactapata archaeological site. After a break to explore the site and enjoy a packed lunch, you will continue uphill to the first night's campsite at Ayapata. Here, you will enjoy a delicious dinner and settle in for a well-deserved rest before continuing the journey the following day.

Inca Trail
Day 2 of the Inca Trail trek starts with an early morning wake-up call, followed by a hearty breakfast. The trek continues with a gradual climb to the top of the first pass, Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman's Pass), standing at an altitude of 4,215 meters. This ascent can be challenging, but the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys make it all worthwhile. After a brief rest at the top, the trek descends into the Pacaymayo Valley, where the campsite for the night is located. Along the way, hikers will pass through a variety of landscapes, from high altitude grasslands to cloud forests filled with orchids and bromeliads. The campsite at Pacaymayo is situated in a beautiful location, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. After a hot dinner and some stargazing, hikers can retire to their tents for a well-deserved rest.

On day 3, the Inca Trail continues uphill to the second pass, known as Runkurakay, which sits at an altitude of 3,970 meters (13,022 feet). After reaching the pass, the trail descends through the cloud forest to the ruins of Sayacmarca, an archaeological site located at an elevation of 3,624 meters (11,887 feet). From there, hikers will continue through the forest, passing by several smaller ruins along the way, before reaching the third pass, Phuyupatamarca, at an altitude of 3,670 meters (12,040 feet). The trail then descends down to the impressive ruins of Wiñay Wayna, which feature impressive agricultural terraces and a series of ritual baths. This campsite sits at an elevation of 2,650 meters (8,694 feet) and provides a stunning view of the surrounding mountains.

Day 4 starts early with breakfast and a trek to the checkpoint to enter the final stretch of the Inca Trail. Hikers will visit the Inti Punku or Sun Gate, which offers the first panoramic view of Machu Picchu, a sight that makes the challenging trek worth it. After taking in the breathtaking view, hikers will head to Machu Picchu itself for a guided tour of the ancient ruins, which were rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. At the end of the day, hikers will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes for a celebratory lunch before taking the train back to Ollantaytambo and the bus back to Cusco.

5.00Our tour guide Cesar was absolutely amazing at guiding us and explaining all the details. He was also extremely friendly and knowledgeable in all things related to Peruvian culture. the cook Leo and the porters were incredible as well. regardless of weather, they made sure we were fed delicious food and comfortable in our tents

The trip was both challenging and impressive, and the team made it smooth and enjoyable from start to finish. Everyone worked together like a family — always ready to help and ensuring we had everything we needed. The organization was excellent, with every detail thoughtfully planned so all we had to do was relax and enjoy the adventure. Our guide, Nico, was outstanding. He shared many fascinating facts during the journey, and his passion for what he does made the history come alive in a memorable way. The food was exceptional — it felt like dining in a restaurant surrounded by nature! A big thank-you to our talented chef, Mauro, for making every meal special. The camping setup was very comfortable, with spacious tents and warm, cozy sleeping bags. 5.00We had a fantastic experience on the 4 day Inca trail trip. It’s such a is such a beautiful part of the world and Machu Pichu took our breath away. The whole team were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We couldn’t believe how the chef Mauro could create such delicious meals in the wilderness. Big shout out to our tour guide who made the entire trip both interesting and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend to use Inca Trail Machu tour agency for anyone who wants to experience a journey of a lifetime.

5.00Once in a lifetime! Every detail was thought out, Rolando was knowledgeable and polite and deferential. Leo served us gourmet feasts for every meal. The porters carried everything effortlessly. We learned so much about Incan history and feel very spoiled by the whole experience.

5.00The walk was very challenging, with the altitude and rough paths and very steep terrain. It was very rewarding to complete the trip and arrive at Machu Picchu on a beautiful sunny morning ! Our chef, Mouro was amazing; he created amazing 4 course meals every mealtime and we were never hungry. Our tour guide, Caesar, was immensely helpful and gave us the best experience possible (even the best weather !).

5.00So well organized and executed. At first we were ahead of schedule... Josias showed us extra stuff and took us on detours... Then some of us got sick, our guide jumped into action and found a way to make it work. Everyone made it and had an amazing experience. The chef and porters were magic. Can't recommend this company enough!

5.00I highly recommend the company Inca Trail Machu The service was beyond excellent in every way. My high expectations were met and even exceeded. Should have 6 stars. Our guide Josias was exceptional. He was well organized and very helpful when some people got sick and was willing to do whatever it took to help us make it. The chef and porters all did an excellent job. It was amazing to have such good meals on the trail. We actually did the 5 day Trek which is not a review option but simply an extra day to the 4 day trek and I highly recommend taking the extra day. We hiked the standard 4 days and we tour circuit 1. However, we were very tired by then and it was nice to have the extra day to rest and finish tour circuit 2 Machu Picchu and the mountain the next day. We had a very good trek...

5.00I joined the Inca Trail tour with Tierras Vivas, and our tour guide Nico Raul made the whole experience truly unforgettable! Nico was extremely responsible and attentive. Throughout the journey, he shared a wealth of knowledge about Inca history and culture, making every step meaningful. I struggled with shortness of breath and altitude sickness, and he genuinely cared about my condition. He even offered me “condor’s pee” a few times to help relieve the symptoms, which really touched me. The porters from Tierras Vivas were also very friendly and professional. They took great care of us, and the food they prepared was absolutely delicious—way better than I expected for a trekking trip! I highly recommend Tierras Vivas to anyone planning to do the Inca Trail. Their service, care, and attention to detail are truly excellent!
