Mount Meru
We will depart from the hotel in Arusha in the morning. Our expedition begins with a drive to Arusha National Park which takes approximately one hour. The lively vegetation in the park is extremely versatile. The infamous film Hatari starring Hollywood’s Hardy Kruger and John Wayne was shot in the park. Once we have completed the necessary park formalities, our trek will officially commence close to the Ngarenanyuki River. Our first waypoint is the Miriakamba. You will be accompanied by an armed ranger and a professional mountain guide throughout the duration of the walk. During the walk, you will encounter a vast amount of wildlife including buffalo, waterbucks, giraffes, warthogs, zebras, and gazelles. Your guide will identify the different bird species you come across. There is a possibility that you will see leopards or elephants but they tend to be more reserved compared to the ones in the Serengeti.

Mount Meru
The Mount Meru trekking excursion begins shortly after midnight. For the next five hours, the light of your headlamp will guide you on the path. Ascending to the summit is the most difficult part of the trek. The high altitude makes climbing to the top an arduous task. Once you reach the peak we will give you an opportunity to snap some pictures and recollect yourself. The downward journey is absolutely mesmerizing because there are scenic views of the luscious mountains and vibrant landscapes. We have a leisurely lunch at the Saddle Hut but the journey is not over yet. We will walk for roughly two hours until we reach the Miriakamba Hut, where we will spend the night.

Mount Meru
We will enjoy a hearty breakfast at the camp and then we will commence the final part of the trek. The hike requires us to travel amid Meru’s cloud forest – which resembles an enchanted forest in a whimsical novel. The steep incline on the way to the Momela gate tends to be slippery, we urge you to step cautiously. When you arrive at the Momela Gate there will be an opportunity to buy sodas and Mount Meru trekking t-shirts. The Meru slopes Tours and safaris vehicle will transport you back to where you started.

We had a wonderful experience with Meru Slopes Tours. The guides, John and Julian, were exceptional: young, prepared, always kind and helpful, even in the most difficult moments. A big thank you also to porters, waiters and chefs, who assisted us with professionalism, bringing all the equipment and preparing great meals every day. The climb is challenging but rewarded by a spectacular sunrise from the summit and breathtaking nature along the way. To know: no showers, but every day we were provided with hot water to wash. You need warm clothes and torches, especially for the night climb to the top. The only negative point: unclear tips. No one had informed us properly and this caused an unpleasant moment at the end, because we did not have enough cash with us to thank the team as we would have liked. In any case, the mishap was clarified later with the tour operator. That said, we absolutely recommend this experience with Meru Slopes because the value for money is really great!

We did the 4 day Mount Meru climb and afterwards we did the 4 day safari but here i will only witte about the Mount Meru. We make another review about the safari. Our experience about the mountain climb is very good. The day of arrival we got a really professional briefing from our operator and the guide. They checked our stuff and told us everything about what to expect. We underestimated the trip a bit but luckily we had the best guide (Hussein!) and the best porters. Hussein gave us a lot of info. Ofcourse about the mountain, the nature and everything but also about the culture, the tribes, the daily life of the people in Tanzania. Because of the circumstances we decided in colaboration to do the hike in 3 days instead of 4. For us it was sometimes hard and we did not feel well all the time but because of Hussein and the other staff we could make it to the summit. We were very happy with the result and the team of Meru slopes really gave us the best experience! Without them we would not have made it. One last note; be aware of the amount of tips that you are supposed to give. Although we really liked the experience and we understand the tips is really important and welcome for the staff it’s quite an amount of money that you will pay when you already payed for the trip.

Mount Meru gets overlooked in favour of Kilimanjaro, but - although lower - it offers wonderful wildlife sightings on the lower slopes on the mountains (giraffes, warthogs and bushbucks), and some challenging terrain near the peak (involving climbing over sharp rocks). Meru Slopes was really efficient and helpful in suggesting and itinerary and answering all my queries regarding the logistics - in particular, Kelvin Bonith was an excellent point of contact for me throughout the process. A highlight of my time in Tanzania!

Before going into details, we very highly recommend this trek with Meru Slopes. We went for a 4d3n trek on Mount Meru during our honeymoon trip in Tanzania, which culminated in a New Year's Day summit with a million-dollar sunrise view! It was an unforgettable experience for my wife and I. We had an excellent team of seven with both of us, and they made the trip very comfortable for us (we hadn't gone on any treks for 5 and 10 years respectively). Our guides Nico and Yona accompanied us on the way up from Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut and then Saddle Hut for the first two days. These two parts of the trek are led by the armed park ranger (randomly-assigned) for safety reasons. We observed that our guides were the only ones who carried a 6-litre water bottle for us to refill if we ran out - no one else did this. These two segments were fairly easy. After settling down in Saddle Hut, our guides took us to Little Meru for some nice views, and we even picked up some useful Swahili words from them during the walk. Our cook Shorti made us very good meals throughout our trip. Quantity was a bit much though, as they had to make sure everyone has enough to eat, but we thoroughly enjoyed the food. Our waiter Paulo was also excellent in taking care of all our needs, and is also very fluent in English. We started the summit at 1am and arrived in time for sunrise. It was quite an arduous trek in the dark - cold with strong winds, damp as we walked through moving clouds, sometimes sand in our eyes, and a tricky trek thanks to lots of rocks and gravel. After 30mins on the summit taking in the view and lots of photos, we headed back to Saddle Hut (tough too as it was a little slippery with the loose stones), making it back in 4 hours (considered slow). This is not a very tough trek but certainly not a walk in the park either. However, there was no need for us to worry as our guides did a thorough visual equipment check the day before at our hotel to ensure that we had everything. They even brought a spare coat along for us just in case. We had a good slow and steady pace, so it wasn't too tiring. Very good navigation by our guides too, god knows how they find their way in the dark! On our way down from Saddle Hut we both had painful knees, making it a pretty horrible experience during the descent. Our team was very thoughtful though and prepared hot water for us to massage our legs with to ease the pain. Did I mention the view? Kilimanjaro sits majestically in the background throughout your entire trek, easily visible on clear days. There is a viewing platform at Miriakamba Hut where you can see Kilimanjaro to the east with the Momella lakes and the sunrise. You get an even better view from the top of Meru: we were fortunate to get perfect weather, and we saw Kilimanjaro next to a rising morning sun, a sea of clouds below, the triangular shadow of Mount Meru itself behind us, and also the majestic ridge leading from Rhino Point to the summit, with the volcanic ash crater next to it. Frankly if you want to enjoy Kilimanjaro, we figure it's better to admire it from Mount Meru than to climb it for 6-9 days. Overall it was a very memorable trek. We highly recommend this to anyone visiting Tanzania with a few days to spare. If you are physically very fit you can also complete this in three days. The views and experience are totally worth it.

We did the 4 day trekking with Silvery’s team and it was FANTASTIC!! It was the best trek I ever did in my life. Challenging but we managed thanks to Silvery, Leonardo and the rest of the crew. Silvery even lent me his gloves because mine were not warm enough. Leonardo was also so kind and helpful. The food was great and more than enough, we were never hungry. Highly recommend this tour group!
