This small town was relatively remote but brought to fame by the almost extinct Mekong River dolphins. The best spot to watch the dolphins is at the Kampi village, 15 km north from town. Dolphin watching is a very popular activity. It is estimated that there are less than 80 dolphins left and the best time to see them frolicking, sometimes in large groups, is in the late afternoon.

We would hugely recommend the dolphin tour - but just get a Tuk Tuk to drive you out to the boat office and pay $8 to be taken out on the boat. We don’t think this tour was worth it. The guide didn’t tell us anything about the area, the river, or the dolphins. He didn’t come on the boat with us (so the photos are a bit misleading) and just dropped us at the boat office to buy our tickets (NOT included in this price). He did the same at the temple - just dropped us at the bottom of the stairs (after making us take smiley photos with him). The temple has lots of signs explaining the history but none in English so we didn’t have a clue about the history of the site. Overall, the dolphin trip was amazing (we saw 5!) but this tour was a let down and you’re essentially paying for an expensive Tuk Tuk driver.

We had an absolute wonderful time on this tour. Mr. Hak was a knowledgeable, friendly and overall great tour guide. He explained a lot about the dolphins and area. He took the time to really show us Kratie and Kampi village. The tour is 100 percent worth it. We saw many of the rare dolphins. I would recommend this tour and I really hope you get Mr. Hak!
