Day 2: The Georgian Military Road & High Caucasus

Ananuri fortress complex

Ananuri Fortress is a 16th–17th century medieval castle complex located on the shores of the Zhinvali Reservoir, along the Georgian Military Road. Once the residence of the powerful Aragvi Dukes, the fortress played an important defensive role in protecting the trade route between the Caucasus and Tbilisi.

Pasanauri

In Pasanauri, visitors can witness a unique natural phenomenon — the meeting point of the Black Aragvi and White Aragvi rivers. Although they merge into one river, their waters often maintain visibly different colors for some distance. This happens because the rivers originate from different mountain sources and carry different minerals and sediments.

Russian Georgian Friendship Monument

The Gudauri Friendship Monument, also known as the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, is a large circular structure located along the Georgian Military Road near Gudauri ski resort. Built in 1983, the monument was created to commemorate the friendship treaty between Georgia and Russia. Its colorful mosaic murals depict scenes from Georgian and Russian history. Situated at around 2,000 meters above sea level, the monument offers breathtaking panoramic views over the deep mountain valleys of the Caucasus. It is one of the most popular photo stops on the way to Kazbegi, combining dramatic scenery with striking Soviet-era architecture.

Stepantsminda, commonly known as Kazbegi, is a small mountain town located in northeastern Georgia along the Georgian Military Road, near the Russian border. Situated at approximately 1,740 meters above sea level, it serves as the main gateway to the high Caucasus Mountains and is famous for its breathtaking views of Mount Kazbek (5,047 m) — one of the highest peaks in Georgia.
