Danakil is one of the most geologically active regions with three tectonic plates meeting at the Afar Triple Junction. When tectonic plates move apart like at Danakil, it creates lave lakes, hot springs, geysers and fissures in the ground. Our tour is unique as it is well-arranged including "must visit" historic sites of Lalibela and Axum together with the breathtaking landscape in Tigray which we deliver all with Ethiopian hospitality and touch.

Erta Ale
We start our day by driving to Erta Ale via Mekele (which means smoky mountain in Afar language). Erta Ale ranks one of the most alluring and physically challenging natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia. It is a shield volcano with a base diameter of 30 km and 1km square caldera at its summit. Erta Ale contains the world’s only permanent lava lake. It is 613 meters, with a lava lake, one of only five in the world, at the summit. It is notable for being the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century. We start early 9:00 AM, drive to Dodom (at the base of Erta Ale). This is may be one of the roughest roads in the world. The 80 km distance may take about 6 hrs passing through changing landscape of solidified lava, rock, sand and occasional palm lined oasis. After passing several small hamlets scattered here and there in this deserted land, you will arrive to Dodom camping site, located about 17km from Erta Ale. Dinner will be served around 17:00 o’clock. After a short break, trek up to Ertale at 20:00 hours. Camels will be transporting all the camping materials and some food (sleeping materials like light mattresses and mat and water) to the rim of the volcano, where we spend the night watching the dramatic action of the boiling lava. You will spend the night on top of the mountain, at the rim of the Volcano.

Descend from Erta Ale around 9 am Dodom – Leave back to Dodom after an early breakfast, if possible at 07:00 o’clock. You will reach the latest at 10:30 o’clock at the camp, where you will be relaxing. As soon as possible, drive to reach the mythical Lake Giulietti (or Lake Afrera)(optional may not be available during summer time), a saltwater lake located more than100 meters below sea level, in one of the deepest depressions of the planet. Because of the picturesque landscape, it is interesting to visit the salt flats where the Afar people obtain the salt by evaporating the water of the lake., continue to Erbiti and proceed Abaala/ Hamed Ela

A trip combining the Danakil Depression and Tigray churches will give you an unforgettable insight into both Ethiopia’s natural beauty and deep religious history. The contrast between the desolate, otherworldly landscapes of the Danakil and the spiritual, historical significance of the Tigray rock-hewn churches offers a truly unique adventure. We paid only $300 pp for both Danakil Depression and Tigray churches.

I didnt even end up going on a tour with them cause they tried to scam me from the beginning! I asked them for payment method and they told me its cash or card. So I choose card payment! All of a sudden card payment was not available anymore. They tried to force me to pay cash! Well knowing that I had booked all of my flights already and everything! So do yourself a favour and stay away from this company If you want to enjoy your holidays in Ethiopia!

This is an extraordinary tour company. I cannot thank them enough. While travelling with them, I became ill. They provided care and service beyond and above any expectations. The hotels they proved for the tour are excellent as are the vehicles. They did everything and anything to accommodate my illness. One criticism: You must have significant physical stamina to take this tour. I recommend that they provide a DETAILED itinerary which includes hours spent driving and the fact that you are expected to sleep outside in 120-degree weather in Danakil and waling. There are trips requiring hours (some as long as seven hours) of driving over rock beds that are bone jarring despite the excellent condition of the transportation. Please note that due to my illness they provided air transportation in leu of the road transportation at THEIR EXPENSE.

It was great to travel with Ett. Definitely not easy to organise this big trip to one of the most extreme parts of our planet but they've done pretty good job.

I joined the tour in the last December and they helped me to process the Ethiopian Visa and I just got it three hours before my flight. This is their extra work to make my trip successful! Of course, the tour arranged my itinerary in details and I enjoyed it. Many thanks to the tour to bring me an impressive journey with lots of care along my itinerary. Thank you!

It was a magical trip with first rate service. My guides were responsive and communicated the entire time even when they weren’t with me.The historical knowledge of my guides and their willingness to share their personal stories was amazing. Also, the food was amazing. They took us to all of their local favorite places that they loved and helped us order. I feel like we had a true insider’s view of the cities we visited.

My family and I (Wife and two boys 17 and 19) booked this adventure with ETT as they started off responsive and seemed to offer what we wanted. All flights were booked but it was clear that the hotels were booked late, so the lodge I asked for, and was told we had, was not actually booked and we ended up in the Amoro Lodge in Adigrat (great food, but hard beds and no hot water). Our tour started in Lalibela visiting the churches over two days. I don't think you need any more that this. Lalibela Lodge was rudimentary, showers hot and beds OK. Food was OK but having Ethiopian cooks making western food was a failure. No local fair offered. But...we didn't get sick, which is our yardstick for food in Ethiopia. We then flew to Axum, had lunch but didn't get to drive by the Axum Obelisks, even though we asked the guide and driver to do so. Here we started deviating from the itinerary as we simply didn't have enough tie to see all the places ETT had listed. Should have taken an earlier flight from Lalibela to Axum. Monastery at Adwa and the Temple at Yeha were amazing. We arrived in Adigrat around 2000 expecting to stay at the Geralta Lodge, but ended up in the Amoro Lodge - good food, average beds and no hot water. Rudimentary breakfast. Drove to Geralta where we visited Abuna Yemata Guh - a good climb and very exciting due to the complete lack of anything safety related. Then to Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. All three were amazing and well worth the visit. The Dankil tour was at the end and conducted in reverse order to the itinerary, which is OK, but we were not briefed about what we were doing or where we were going, which is all very disconcerting. The Dankil tour including Enta Ale (volcano) is definitely a two day trip crammed into three days. We stopped every hour to have coffee, or look at a view and two hours for lunch, to then be rushed through the attraction. Base camps on the salt lake looked like a rubbish tip, food was good, beds were like hammocks (but strangely comfortable). Our group was over 35 people, so setting up for bed was a bit like a demolition derby with the 4WD vying for position. Grubby sheets and sleeping bags at the base camp and the volcano. Drivers spoke little English but at least we were all in one car. Do this tour first as you'll need a shower before you return to the airport to fly out. We had the same issues as the other average posts. In general, Ethiopia has so much tourist potential, but the operators are only after the money - as quoted by one guide when we confronted him about how disorganised the tour was. When we noted that the majority of the drivers didn't speak English, and we weren't briefed on what was happening, he replied that 'you are in Ethiopia you know'. True, but the tour group could all speak English, not Amharic or Tigreyan. Recommendations for travelers: use a different company, but if you can't, make sure they have booked the accommodation and flights before you pay. If doing Dankil and volcano, do it first as you'll need a hotel with a shower before jumping back on the plane. BYO gas mask if you do the volcano - we were told at the last minute to bring a mask - surgical would be fine....it wasn't. The whole group sucked in a lung full of sulfur dioxide gas (I think) which left us coughing and a burning sensation in the back of the nose. BYO sleeping bag. Get the driver to stop at a bottle shop to get some Ethiopian produced Ouzo (about $3 USD per bottle). It tastes great with coke and better than the wine on offer in some of the restaurants. Bring a sense of adventure, and keep calm when things stuff up - as the guide said, this is Ethiopia!
