After about a 6-hour drive from Accra—with lunch and toilet stops along the way, we will begin our first experience of Ashanti culture by exploring the art of hand-woven Kente cloth. You'll learn about the rich history of Kente weaving, including the meanings behind the various colors and patterns, and the traditional ceremonies or occasions for which each design is suited. After the demonstration, you'll have the opportunity to try your hand at weaving and shop for souvenirs at the showroom. Prices are fair and negotiable, so feel free to bargain for the best deal.

Ntonso Adinkra Craftsmen

At Ntonso we will learn about the famous Adinkra symbols and also get to purchase some souvenirs at a fair price, after which we will retire to our hotel for the day.

Manhyia Palace Museum

After breakfast, we will head to the Manhyia Palace, the official residence of the Asantehene (Ashanti King), to learn more about the Ashanti Kingdom, its rich culture, and its people. We will explore the history of their resistance against British colonization, including their fight to protect the sacred Golden Stool, symbol of the Ashanti nation. During the visit, we will also have the chance to view some important artifacts, once looted by the British during colonial times, which have now been "loaned" back to Ghana.

Kejetia Market

Kumasi is also home to the largest open air market in West Africa, Kejetia Market. After our palace tour, we’ll explore a section of this vibrant market, where you can experience the real hustle and bustle of local life. Whether you're shopping for souvenirs or simply soaking in the lively atmosphere, it’s an experience not to miss. After the market visit, we’ll head to a local restaurant for lunch, then return to the hotel to relax and begin packing for our departure to Cape Coast the following day.

Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park

After breakfast, we will check out of our hotel in Kumasi and begin our approximately four hour drive to Cape Coast. Along the way, we will make an important and emotional stop at the Ancestral Slave River site in Assin Manso. This historic site marks the place where enslaved Africans had their 'last bath' before being taken to the coastal forts and castles for shipment to the unknown world. In a symbolic and reflective moment, we will take our 'first bath' here to honor the memory of our ancestors and to connect with their journey.

Kakum National Park

We will visit Kakum National Park, located about a 40 minute drive from our hotel, to experience the famous rainforest canopy walk. This exhilarating walk takes you across a series of suspension bridges high above the forest floor, offering breathtaking views of the lush canopy and its wildlife. Please note that the canopy walk may not be ideal for those with a fear of heights, seniors, or individuals with knee or mobility issues, as it involves some physical exertion. However, for those up for the challenge, it promises to be a thrilling and memorable adventure.

Cape Coast Castle Experiences

Cape Coast Castle, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds profound historical significance as one of the principal locations involved in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. During our visit, we will tour the castle’s dungeons, which once held countless enslaved Africans under inhumane conditions as they awaited forced departure. The tour culminates at the infamous "Door of No Return," symbolizing the final point of exit for the captives before their transportation to the Americas and other parts of the world. This visit provides an opportunity to reflect and pay solemn tribute to the memory of those who were forcibly taken from their homeland.

Elmina Castle

After breakfast and checking out of our hotel, we will head to Elmina Castle, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the oldest European structures in sub Saharan Africa, originally built by the Portuguese. Like Cape Coast Castle, Elmina played a central role in the trans Atlantic slave trade, serving as a holding point for enslaved Africans before they were shipped to the New World. After this deeply moving visit, we will begin our journey back to Accra, marking the end of our tour.
