Marangu Route 6 Days – The Kilimanjaro trekking Marangu Route is perhaps the easiest and most comfortable route to reach the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. The route is well-developed and the climb is constant and moderate. Only the approach to the summit is the exception as it is slightly more demanding. The accommodation on this tour is in simple mountain huts, which might be an advantage compared to the camping routes.

Depart Arusha/Moshi around 0800hrs to Marangu Gate for the Mountain Climb Registration. Begin your Kilimanjaro trek by walking along a narrow trail through the rainforest of Kilimanjaro for most of the hike. Eat a picnic lunch at Kisambioni, day one’s halfway point. After lunch continue walking through the rainforest until reaching Mandara Hut. Relax for the rest of the day or take a short walk to Mahundi Crater. The views to the east over Taveta and to the northwest to Mawenzi Peak are striking on a clear day, making the short hike well worth the effort.

Around 2330hrs, you will wake up and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night, and this is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer point (17225ft/5250m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s point (18639ft/5 681m), which is located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone screed, requiring a great physical and mental effort.

Just returned from an incredible two-week journey with Meru Slopes! I first discovered Meru Slopes last year through a friend who shared her positive safari experience with them. When planning my trip to Tanzania for a safari and Kilimanjaro adventure, Meru Slopes was my first choice! During the planning phase, I was impressed by Geoffrey's excellent communication and flexibility. Unlike my previous experiences with other tour companies, Meru Slopes was accommodating with dates, lodging, trekking routes, and other specific requests. The pricing was also highly competitive! Upon arriving in Tanzania, we were promptly picked up from the airport and taken to our hotel, where Geoffrey met us in person to provide valuable insights and prepare us for what to expect—an incredibly personal touch. The first half of our journey was spent on safari, exploring Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire. We upgraded from camping to mid-range lodges and found the accommodations to be delightful, well-located, and focused on hospitality. Our safari guide, Robert, was exceptionally knowledgeable, guiding us to the best spots for wildlife viewing and photography. The outstanding safari experience with Robert and Meru Slopes aligned with the numerous positive online reviews. The second half of our trip involved trekking Kilimanjaro on the Marangu (Coca Cola) Route. As a first-timer, I was anxious, but on the last day of safari, our trekking guides, Hussain and Yona, met us in person at our hotel. With over 10 years of Kilimanjaro climbing experience each, they were true experts. They ensured we had the right gear and provided sleeping bags and hiking poles. Their detailed day-by-day route overview and commitment to our success were reassuring. Throughout the trek, they went above and beyond—reminding us to stay hydrated, encouraging a steady pace, and even offering to carry backpacks. The food was plentiful and delicious, with thoughtful adjustments to cater to reduced appetite at higher elevations. On summit night, they prepared fresh ginger tea, showcasing their exceptional care. While our guides were outstanding, the porters and support team were also friendly and encouraging, always ready to cheer us on and enhance our comfort. Despite limited online reviews for Kilimanjaro and Meru Slopes, my experience far exceeded expectations! I cannot praise Meru Slopes enough for the exceptional service provided by Geoffrey (Booking), Robert (Safari), and Hussain/Yona (Trekking)! Thank you for giving me the trip of a lifetime!

A great way to climb Kilimanjaro. Very well organised and good communication throughout. The guides Michael and Yano looked after us really well. The food and accommodation was great and we would highly recommend Meru Slopes for your Kilimanjaro experience.
