Afterwards, we'll continue on to the Civil Rights Memorial center and many other sites related to the Civil Rights movement. It's been said that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.

National Memorial for Peace and Justice
The National Memorial for Peace and Justice was conceived with the hope of creating a sober, meaningful site where people can gather and reflect on America's history of racial inequality. Set on a six-acre site, the memorial uses sculpture, art, and design to contextualize racial terror. The national memorial is a sacred space for truth-telling and reflection about racial terror in America and its legacy.

This was clearly the highlight of our summer vacation. We saw so many locations where important history was made. Mr. Williams knew firsthand because he was there at the time. He has so many stories that make the history come alive. We ate lunch at a "hole in the wall" restaurant that had really good southern food and a friendly ambience. A couple of tips if you're not as knowledgeable (and we were definitely not). It is possible to conflate the timeline of the bus boycott with the Selma march; but these events are separated by ten years or so. Also, we studied up a bit prior to the tour so it would not overwhelm, including watching a couple of movies (2014 "Selma" movie was one). The day after our tour we left Montgomery going back through Selma and actually drove around Selma to revisit a couple of the areas of interest. If we would have had more time, we would have liked to travel to Marion where Jimmie Lee Jackson was murdered. Finally, the story of Viola Liuzzo was fascinating though outrageous; and we stopped on our own at her memorial site to pay our respects. The fight continues.

This is a tour like no other. Jake is simply the most knowledgeable, professional, personable tour guide you will meet. I thought I knew a lot already, having lived through the 1960s, but Jake gave a breadth and depth of information that is invaluable to understanding Selma and Montgomery. Suitable for all ages and backgrounds. If you are anywhere near Alabama, go with Jake.

We went on the. 6 hour private tour of Montgomery and Selma with Jake Williams. It was outstanding! Jake is a gentleman and a professional. He also was a participant in the March between Selma and Montgomery. His first hand knowledge of the events helped make this a very special experience. Anyone who is considering visiting this area should take his tour. You will leave feeling that you have gained tremendous insight into the events that unfolded here. Highly, highly recommended.

We are a group of four academics who spent two days with Jake. Not only were we immersed in the civil rights movement in Montgomery but we also incorporated a drive to Selma and a walk over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. We learned so much from a very knowledgeable man who in 1965 participated as a 12 year old in the Selma to Montgomery protest marches. We started off with a tour through Montgomery which set the stage for everything we learned along the way. You can't find a better or more passionate guide than Jake.

Jake, the tour guide was absolutely spectacular. He picked us up from our bed and breakfast in his super nice van. He was dressed professional and had such a way about him. You can tell he has experienced so much in his lifetime and it really makes him a stellar tour guide. He’s so genuine and has so much knowledge to share. We got to see a lot of Montgomery that we would not have seen otherwise. The history and stories are heartbreaking but powerful. I can’t recommend this your enough.

I took my sister on a whirlwind tour of important sites in the Civil Rights Movement for her birthday. I’m so glad I came across a listing for Jake Williams’ tour! Mr Williams is an amazing historian and advocate for Montgomery, Alabama. He not only shared his own personal experience during the March to Selma but he showed us all of the sites in Montgomery and taught us the history that took place in each location. We retraced the route from Selma to Montgomery and traveled through his home County of Lowndes County as well. This was a once in a lifetime experience that I am so grateful for. I left wanting to return to Montgomery as soon as possible and have been encouraging everyone to go there and take his tour. Trust me, book this tour.
