At 9am, leave Arusha for Machame Gate, where you will meet our porters, guides and cooks that will spend the next six days trekking with you to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. The drive through coffee farms and villages to Machame Gate takes about 1.5 hours. After arriving, wait at the gate while we register your climb and the porters and guides make final preparations. Hike to Machame Camp via the mystical, moss-covered trees of Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest. As the forest thins later in the hike, take in the heathers, tall grasses and wildflowers. If the weather is clear, enjoy the striking views of your ultimate destination, Kibo Peak. Our porters and cooks will go ahead and prepare the campsite before you arrive.
Spend the night at Shira Camp. Our staff will arrive early to select the best spot and set up camp.

Kilimanjaro National Park
Today’s trek includes several uphill sections so carry plenty of drinking water as it can be hot hiking on a clear day. There are several viewpoints from which to view the plains and forests below, and the commanding Kibo and Mawenzi peaks above. Notice the change in vegetation as you gain altitude. The trees diminish in size, giving way to Kilimanjaro’s famous high altitude plants, Scenecio kilimanjari and Lobelia deckenii. After lunch, climb the Shira Plateau, created when Kibo’s lava flows filled the Shira crater. Continue to Shira Camp and relax for the rest of the day. Kibo lies to the west and Mount Meru to the east.
Barranco Camp is perhaps Machame's most beautiful campsite. Enjoy Kilimanjaro's other-worldly plant life on this day.

Although this up and down day ends with an elevation gain of only 110 meters, by early afternoon you will have climbed 690 meters to a height of 4,530 meters before beginning your descent to Barranco Camp. This day is crucial for acclimatization. After breakfast, hike east on the Shira Plateau before reaching the junction for the Shira and Lemosho Routes. Continue on through the barren landscape before stopping for lunch. Shortly after lunch, reach the highest point of the day before descending quickly to Barranco Camp. Faster hikers can take a detour via Lava Tower, a 300-foot lava formation jutting out of the mountainside.
This day is crucial for acclimatization. Camp above Karanga Valley with views of Tanzania below.

Leave Barranco Camp after breakfast for Karanga Valley. The day begins with an hour-and-a-half scramble up the Barranco Wall. This is the hardest part of the day and in some places you may have to use your hands to aid your climb. After reaching the top, hike through fairly level terrain before making a short but steep descent into the green Karanga River Valley.
Try to get as much rest as possible at Barafu Camp. You will start your trek to Uhuru Peak around midnight.

After breakfast, begin the hike to Barafu Camp. On the way to Barafu, view several of Kibo’s glaciers as well as the junction that connects the descent route, Mweka, with the Machame trail. During day four, hike by the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. Although the trail to Barafu passes through alpine desert with little vegetation, Barafu Camp offers stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Try to sleep upon finishing dinner as you will wake before midnight for your summit hike.
After a long day to Kilimanjaro's summit and back down the mountain, enjoy a final evening with our crew at Mweka Camp.

Mount Kilimanjaro
Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Hike by the light of your headlamp for the next six hours. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Stella Point. The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately one hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers. At Barafu Camp, eat breakfast and take a short break. You still have another three to five hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp.

We (two of us) recently completed the 8-day Lemosho route to the summit of Kilimanjaro with Duma Explorers (also known as Alika Africa). From planning to execution, the experience was excellent. The crew was efficient, respectful, and highly experienced. What stood out most was their attention to safety and support. Every member of the team had a clear role and executed it well. Camps were ready when we arrived. Meals were hot, balanced, and surprisingly varied for the altitude. Health checks were routine, and gear was in good condition. The porters were fast, organized, and always professional. Summit day support deserves special mention. Dickson, Emanuel, and Ernest accompanied our team of two hikers all the way. Emanuel stayed with me throughout the summit push — reminding me to stay alert and keep hydrated. Dickson looked after my partner and made sure she reached the summit and got back safely, which was especially important as both of us were feeling the effects of altitude. Their steady presence made a real difference. Special thanks to: Emanuel Sifael Mungure (Chief Guide) – Calm, observant, and steady throughout. Knew when to push and when to pause. Ernest Mbwambo (Assistant Guide) – Supportive, good at spotting altitude symptoms, and helpful on the trail. Eliasa Said Yusufu (Cook) – Made hearty, flavorful meals that kept us going. Always something warm and satisfying. Dickson Sumary (Waiter) – On top of every detail. Checked in constantly. Played a key role on summit day. Herman Iddi Mmbaga (Tent Attendant) – Our tent was always clean, dry, and ready. Mohamedi Lisu (Toilet Attendant) – Kept everything hygienic and functional at each stop. Porters: Josephat, Shabani, Seleman, Emmanuel, Ramadhan, Herman, Idrisa (dishwasher), and Daniel – Carried our gear, set up camp, and made the climb possible. Why we recommend Duma Explorers: Clear communication and prep before the hike. Solid logistics — camps, food, and timing were on point. Daily health checks and flexible plans based on how we were doing. Transparent pricing — no surprises or hidden costs. We saw larger, more commercial groups on the mountain, but were glad we went with Duma. Their approach felt more personal, and we always felt supported. Highly recommend Duma Explorers / Alika Africa and Emanuel’s team. They know the mountain well and focus on safety, care, and teamwork.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was a lifelong dream — and thanks to our incredible guides, Colman and Humphrey, it became one of the most meaningful and exhilarating experiences of my life. From the very first day, Colman and Humphrey set the tone with their warm smiles, contagious energy, and deep knowledge of the mountain. They weren’t just guides — they were motivators, medics, storytellers, and friends. Every step of the way, they anticipated our needs, kept our spirits high, and ensured we were healthy, safe, and enjoying the journey. Their leadership was impeccable. Whether it was helping us adjust to the altitude, explaining the terrain ahead, or sharing insights about local culture and wildlife, they handled everything with grace and professionalism. When things got tough near the summit, Colman’s encouragement and Humphrey’s calm presence were exactly what we needed to keep going. “Pole pole,” they reminded us — and step by step, we made it to Uhuru Peak! What made the trip extra special was the genuine care they showed. They celebrated our milestones, checked in constantly, and created a strong sense of camaraderie among the group. By the time we descended, it felt like we were saying goodbye to family. If you’re planning to summit Kilimanjaro, I cannot recommend Colman and Humphrey enough. They turned a challenging hike into a transformative adventure I’ll carry with me forever. Thank you, Colman and Humphrey, for guiding us to the Roof of Africa with heart, humor, and incredible strength. You are legends!

After 7 days and 6 nights, 5 climate zones, 38,680 steps, and 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) of elevation, I can officially say—I conquered Mount Kilimanjaro! This journey wasn’t just about the physical challenge; it was a lesson in patience, resilience, and trusting the process. Having the right support system is everything, and I know I wouldn’t have made it without Gabriel, Emmanuel, and the entire Duma Explorer/Alika Africa crew—their expertise, encouragement, and care made all the difference. They taught me the power of “pole pole” (slowly, slowly), a mantra that carried me to the top. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude, awe, and amazement at my own strength. Kilimanjaro, you tested me, but you also showed me what I’m capable of. One step at a time—always.

This was the coolest experience of my life. Unforgettable and amazing. Sifuni was our driver and he helped make the experience great. You can tell he is so knowledgeable and really wants to help you see the big 5. The camps we visited were great and everything was organized. I was able to leave some luggage and they brought it back after so I didn’t have to carry during the whole safari. We saw everything the big 5, the ugly 5, river crossing and lions eating. Sifuni was great tour guide. I will be back!

It was a dream to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. Duma Explorer/Alika Africa made this dream come true. All the organisation was great: as soon as we landed we were welcomed and taken to the hotel where we had the briefing with the guide to check the gears and we spent the night. The following day we started for the 7 days trekking along the Machame Route. Our crew was amazing : really kind and I can say they did a fantastic job to provide us the best support to reach the summit. Good quality 4 seasons tent, a careful nutrition to have energy for each day, a check of the physical condition every evening...these are just some examples of what is offered. Really really satisfied of this adventure!

Having experienced the impeccable organiazation by Duma on a Tanzania family trip 2014 (one week safari and one week on Zanzibar for me, my wife and our five kids) it was a no-brainer to choose Duma when I, my wife and one of our youngest cubs (now 17 years) decided to hike/climb Kilimanjaro. In spite of our previous excellent experience Duma managed to exceed our expectations! Our head guide (Emmanuel), assistant guide (Colman) and waiter (Dickson) proved to be an absolute dream-team together with Jamal (cook) and the remaining 12 persons in our support crew. Emmanuel, Colman and Dickson were very professional with a high level of security as well as supportive, encouraging - and not least fun and easy to be around. The tent-crew kept our tents (a small 3-person sleeping tent and a larger mess-tent for meals and storage of equipment) in excellent condition and the toilet-tent was always nice and clean (very important!). Jamal prepared very nice rich meals that we ate with good apetite during the entire trip (nope, no AMS). We were actually talking about how we probably were putting on weight climbing Kibo... :-) The hike was challanging, no doubt about that, but with the excellent support by primarily Emmanuel, Colman and Dickson (called the Goon Squad by our son) there was never any question whether we'd all make it. Summit night was the most challanging day starting at midnight under a crispy starry clear sky. Reaching the crater rim at dawn and finally standing at Uhuru point just before nine am under a sunny clear sky was absolutely fantastic! If you have any thoughts what so ever of climbing Kilimanjaro - go for it! You will not regret it! And if you decide to do it, I couldn't recommend Duma stronger. This company is amazing - and when hearing from the employers during the hike that this is the company basically everybody in the business want to work for, well, choosing Duma is an absolute no-brainer. /Richard Birgander
