Tango Buddhist Institute

Hike to Tango Monastery: Tango is located on the mountainside north of Thimphu. There is also a monastery called Cheri located on a mountain in the neighbourhood. Hiking to Tango is much easier as most part of the footpath is paved and the uphill ascent is not as steep. It is roughly 14km from the main Thimphu town. Following the trail through the forests, the walk uphill takes about 1.5 hours at a slow pace. Tango Monastery was founded in 1222 by the Tibetan saint Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, who first established the Drukpa Kagyu School of Buddhism in Bhutan and subsequently became the state religion. The present form of the monastery was built later in 1689 by the Tenzin Rabgye, the 4th Temporal ruler of Bhutan. After visiting the monastery and offering prayers, we retrace our steps back to the base and the drive to Thimphu town. Traditional lunch will be served at the Folk Heritage Museum Restaurant or at one of similar restaurants.

Dochula Pass

After early breakfast, drive to Punakha valley via Dochula, a sacred mountain pass. En route to Punakha, visit Chimi Lhakhang popularly known as ‘Temple of Fertility and then visit the masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture, Punakha Dzong. Dochu La Pass – 3,150m/10,335ft above sea level: About 45 min drive from Thimphu towards Punakha is a mountain pass at an altitude of 3,150 meters above sea level from where you can see, on a clear day, some of the highest peaks of Bhutan. Before the construction of these beautiful 108 Druk Wangyal Choetens (stupas) in 2004, this mountain pass remained only as a sacred place blessed by a famous Tibetan Buddhist saint, Lam Drukpa Kunley in late 15th century. From Dochu La Pass, we will continue driving towards Punakha, passing through some villages, the elevation drops gradually and the road winds through the pine trees. You will feel the drastic change in altitude from 3,150m just an hour and a half ago to a warmer subtropical valley at 1,200m.

Chimi Lhakhang Temple

Chimi Lhakhang is located on a gentle hilltop near the village of Sopsokha about 20-30 minutes walk through beautiful terraced rice fields and traditional farm houses. The history of Chimi Lhakhang is associated with 15th-century Tibetan Lama Drukpa Kunley who was affectionately known as “Divine Madman” for his obscene behavior and outrageous ways of cleansing people from religious dogmatism and egoistic self-possession by exhibiting his strong desire for sex. One of the relics of Chimi Lhakhang is a phallus. The blessing of the phallus is considered sacred particularly to couples who are unable to have children as it brings fertility giving them the ability to bear offspring. Because of this belief, people like to call Chimi Lhakhang as “Temple of Fertility”

Today after an early breakfast, you will hike to the famous 17th-century Taktsang Monastery popular known as the “Tiger’s Nest” and later in the evening visit a beautiful farmhouse for home-cooked local cuisines. Originally built in 1692, the iconic sacred site Taktsang is perched on the 800-meter rock cliff above the valley floor. The round trip hike takes about 4-5 Hours for most visitors. We recommend starting early before the sun gets stronger. One-way horse riding is available for about USD20 up to the midpoint (Taktsang Cafeteria). Horse riding on the way down is not recommended. The history of Taktsang is associated with the visit of Guru Padmasambhava (known as Guru Rinpoche), the Indian saint who came to Bhutan and introduced Tantric Buddhism in the 8th century AD. Nothing but good things to say about Acorn Travel. The communication leading up to the trip was outstanding. They made the preparation easy and were willing to flex the itinerary based on our needs. The all female team of Tshering, our guide, and our driver, Dema, were key in making this trip so memorable and enriching. They are a true team and added a positive vibe to the trip. They listened to our needs and we could count on them to make any needed adjustments to the daily schedule. We learned so much from Tshering about Bhutan and its brand of Buddhism. My birthday took place during the trip and they orchestrated a memorable picnic and celebration in the evening. You will not be disappointed booking with Acorn.

I had a wonderful experience on my solo tour with Bhutan Acorn Tours. Guide Tshering and Driver Tashi were both excellent at their jobs. They were great hosts and represent their country with enthusiasm. I learned so much, and the combination of visits to fortresses, temples, and museums along with all of our hikes in nature was a perfect balance of how to really get a feel for Bhutan. The communication with the tour company was easy, and they handled my visa and plan ticket to Bhutan from India without issues. Highly recommend!

I booked my trip with Bhutan Acorn Tours & Travel. Both Karma and Sonam Choden were very professional with their communication and quick to respond to my many questions. They provided me with a detailed and flexible itinerary for 7 days. With their assistance, they made my travel plans seamless. A shout out to my driver, Zhangpo. His calm demeanor and skillful ability to maneuver those hairpin turns up and down the mountains and avoiding the multitude of animals on the road, made me felt safe and comfortable. My guide, Sonam, was a wealth of information. His love for history and enthusiastic penchant for story telling made my visits to the monasteries, temples and local sites so encaptivating, educational and informative. He was able to transform historic artwork into a language that I can understand and appreciate. He is also a great hiker, entertaining and pacing me every step of the way. I had such a wonderful and unforgettable experience traveling with Sonam and Zhangpo. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to have had them as my travel mates. It felt like three friends going on a week-long road trip. The itinerary gave me a wonderful overview of Bhutan, showing me their natural beauty of the country, tasting their delicious meals and experiencing their rich history, culture and traditions. The hikes allowed me to enjoy the great scenery, fresh air and tranquility. I also had the opportunity to witness their devotion to Buddhism unfold in front of me whenever we visited the temples. It was very beautiful, spiritual and touching. Bhutanese people are very mindful, thoughtful, respectful and genuine. Hospitality is in their blood. Everything they say and do is straight from their heart. I unexpectedly fell madly in love with Bhutan. The beauty of the people and country captivated my heart. I would not hesitate to return and book through Bhutan Acorn Tours & Travel again.

The trip with Bhutan Acorn Tours & Travel is amazing and we have absolutely 0 negative comments about it. They went to great lengths to ensure our itinerary was customised to our comfort, and our tour guide and driver, Tashi and Tshewang, gave us the best seven days we could've asked for in Bhutan—caring, attentive to details, and very knowledgeable. The attractions, services, meals, and accommodations are all worthy (or even above) of their value; and we liked everything included in the tour. Mr. Karma and his team are very responsive and ensured we are comfortable with the arrangements and everything throughout the process. We booked our trip during the lower season but still had one of the most amazing experiences ever!

We will cherish the memory of this journey , both our guide, Yeshi and our driver Zayeapa have been “treasure revealers”: We have discovered this beautiful country and it’s gentle, warm, welcoming people thanks to them. We could not have dreamt of better ambassadors than them to introduce us to Bhutan’s amazing culture. They went out of their way to organize it perfectly, always seemingly effortlessly, but with great professionalism, interesting information, friendliness, conversations and smiles all along the way.
