The Machame Route, with its diverse landscape and fantastic views, offers a unique experience to test your will power, fitness finesse and mental strength. The route takes you through lush rain forest, where colobus monkeys roam, into heath and moorland, with its many ferns and ericas, until finally reaching the icy caps of the mountain top. The varying altitudes on this 7 day tour as well as a little help from lady luck offers a good environment for acclimatization, enhancing your chances of reaching the summit. Overnights on the Machame Route will be in tents.

After breakfast you will be picked up at your hotel and taken to the Kilimanjaro National park gate. After completion of all the necessary paper work, your adventure commences. Your destination for today is the Machame Camp, a 5 – 6 hour hike. Soon you will be hiking through the lush rain forest with its large ancient trees, primeval ferns and endemic flowers, like the Impatiens Kilimanjari. You might also spot black and white thumbless colobus monkeys, peeking through the leaves. Reaching the campsite you will have time to relax, stretch your legs and enjoy a hearty meal, before snuggling into your tent for the night.

Today’s early start is not due to a long stretch, but rather to allow you to reach Shira Camp at around mid-afternoon. As you walk you will notice the dramatic change in the landscape – from lush and green rain forest to dry moor and heath land. Arriving at your campsite a beautiful view of the mountain range opens up before you. The glaciers of Kibo glistens in the golden hue of the setting sun as you enjoy another lovingly cooked meal before climbing into your tent.

Acclimatization is on today’s menu, where you will climb roughly 700 m, but sleep on a level not much higher than the previous night. Starting at Shira Plateau, you will make your way up to Lava Tower (4,640m), where you will rest a while, before continuing through the Barranco Valley to the beautiful Barranco Camp. The trek will take approximately 6 – 7 hours, but the various distractions of the alpine desert as well as the Barranco Valley with its small lobelia plants and giant senecio’s, will keep your mind off the stretch still ahead. A well-deserved dinner and overnight awaits you at Barranco Camp

Today the Barranco Wall stands before you to conquer. Some stages will require you to use your hands for a better grip, but no actual climbing is necessary and your guide will be with you every step of the way to lend a helping hand. The route with its numerous ascents and descents allow for further acclimatization, before reaching the mountain ridge. Walking along the ridge you can take in the beautiful landscape with its stunning contrasts of desert and vegetation, before finally reaching the cloudy Karanga Camp. You trek will take between 3 – 4 hours, leaving more than enough time to rest and play a game of rummy. Evening meal and overnight at Karanga Camp

Awakening to the sunlight dancing off the Kibo Summit, you will enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting out to today’s destination – Barafu Camp. Most of they day will be spent walking through very dry desertic terrain, with Kibo ever present on your left side. After 3-4 hours you will reach Barafu Camp, where you will have an early dinner and overnight as the highlight of your trip is only a few short hours away…

At around midnight you will be awoken by your guide with a warm cup of tea and biscuits to get you ready for your final ascent. The moon and your headlamps will be your only source of light as you make your way up to Stella Point, reaching the crater rim in about 5 – 7 hours. Another 1 – 2 hours will take you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), where you can enjoy the sun rising over the African landscape, casting a pink hue over the snowy peak and making the glaciers sparkle like diamonds around you. After capturing this incredible view and achievement on film, you will start your descent along the same route back to Barafu Camp, where your team awaits you with some snacks and refreshments. Rested and relaxed you will make your way to Mweka Camp for your last night on the highest mountain in Africa.

A scrumptious breakfast is followed by a traditional farewell ceremony from your mountain crew, before you start your final stretch down the mountain. You will once more trek through the rainforest, giving you another opportunity to spot the cheeky colobus monkeys, finally reaching the Mweka gate in about 2 – 3 hours. You will be met at the gate and taken back to the Hotel for a long shower and relaxed day by the pool. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel.

5.00Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro maybe the dream of everyone around the world, after waiting for a long time we were finally able to climb Mount Kilimanjaro via the Machame route for 7 days, we were very nervous but with the experience of Rupia Adventure we were able to climb and reach the top of this mountain with beautiful scenery and white snow, Emmanuel and Gideon were our guides, Samora was a great cook delicious and vitamin-rich food, the best camping equipment from world-famous mountaineers, Matt from the office was very experienced in answering our emails and helping us with good ideas on how to organize this trip, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the entire Rupia Adventure team

5.00Finding it super hard to find the words to describe the life-changing experience we had on Kilimanjaro with the incredible team at Rupia Adventures… I’ve travelled to 54 countries so far and I have to say I’ve yet to have met such a hardworking, kind, humble, professional and FUN crew to be around. Their approach was very individual, human and heartfelt - and didn’t feel robotic like you occasionally encounter with bigger companies who follow the same step-by-step procedures for all. Also, they were so open to sharing more about the general Tanzanian culture & I loved our discussions which made 8hr+ hikes fly by! So honoured to have done the climb with them - I felt completely safe at all times, guided to the highest standard possible and to top that off .. left Tanzania with people I now consider friends. Please don’t hesitate when booking a trek with Rupia. Matt, who coordinated everything in the months leading up and off the mountain was also very organised and there to answer our questions within minutes. He was also updating my loved ones back at home of our progress (with pictures) throughout the week whilst I had no service (loved the digital detox) on the mountain! :) Huge shoutout to our guides Laurent and Gideon as well as Nyati ( the summit crew ) who blew our minds with their confidence, and motivation on summit night. These guys are real life superheroes and when I return to climb Mt Meru or do a safari, it’ll be without a question with the same team.

5.00My friend Eve and I did the 7-day Machame route in March of this year. It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had, and Rupia Adventure is to thank for that. Our guides, Emmanuel and Gideon, were knowledgeable, encouraging, attentive, and generally very fun to be around! This also goes for the rest of our group of porters as well. The food made by our chef was nutritious and very filling, and it served to us by Nyati, who was so kind and diligent in his effort to make us comfortable and content. Our tents were of good quality, and our sleeping bags very warm and cozy for the cool nights. The private toilet was also a huge bonus. I feel so incredibly lucky to have had Rupia Adventure as our team for this profound experience that I'll remember for the rest of my life!
