The tranquility and peace of Lake Chaka seem a thousand lifetimes away from the bustle of Moshi town, but it’s actually only an hour’s drive away, so perfect for a day trip with a difference. Lake Chala is a caldera lake fed by clean, cold underground streams from Kilimanjaro itself, and it’s renowned for its gloriously changing colours; from deepest turquoise to emerald green to azure and all colours in between. It’s a perfect place to relax and unwind and you’ve the choice of hiking the picture-perfect countryside around the lake, swimming in its sparkling waters (don’t forget your cozzie!) or kayaking across the border to Kenya. Or all three! It’s a day full of getting up close and personal to one of the greatest (and quietest) treasures of Tanzania.

Lake Chala
Your friendly guide will arrive at your accommodation armed with your tasty packed lunch. Then he or she will bustle you into the transport and drive you to Lake Chala Safari Camp. On the way you’ll journey through the everyday life of Moshi and on to the freeway, and you can spend a relaxing, comfortable hour-and-a-bit taking in the sights. Lake Chala Safari Camp is a beautiful private game reserve overlooking Lake Chala. You’ll arrive there and our guide will take you down to the lakeside, through vividly green flora, with the blue, blue lake ahead of you. It gets quite rocky near the lake so wear sturdy footwear. It’s a stunning area perfect for hikers and birdwatchers, and in season you might be lucky enough to spot elephants gathering at a distant waterhole. Spend the day wandering the paths around the lake or across the nearby savannah, where you’re likely to see baboons, vervet monkeys and blue monkeys as well as (perhaps) the shy dik-dik and graceful kudu, too. After your hike, spend some time sitting by the lakeside enjoying the stillness, only disturbed by birdsong and the gently lapping waters. If you’re feeling a little more active, you can jump into a kayak and explore the lake further. You’ll be serenaded by the ever-present birdsong and gentle plashing of the water as you row. After your adventures, stop at the bar for a drink (alcoholic or otherwise) and, if you’re a little peckish, an afternoon snack. If you haven’t opted to camp at the Lake (think campfire under the star-filled heavens), you’ll be driven back to Moshi in the late afternoon. The pleasant drive will give you some “you” time to reflect on your day and wonder if it would be rude to go straight to bed when you get back – you won’t believe how tired you’ll feel after a day of restorative, stress-relieving peace.

5.00My wife was interested with canoying and swimming in the lake, we decided to book a lake Chaka tour, the only thing I can insist is the government should look on the imfrastructure, meaning the roads to lake chala

5.00There is small place where you can sit and enjoy the view of the lake. But, I advise that you stay at the deck by the restaurant for better views. We as well rented hiking boots which were important for hiking. We paid around 10usd for the entrance fee. The place was very beautiful and the meals prepared were really nice.

5.00The tour operator was developing and making by tailoring everything for us. We had to decide about the activities we would do once we are at Lake Chala and was amused to find out that there are many things to do here. Eventually, we went and stayed at very good quality permanent tents. The food was also well prepared and arrived on time. Everything was nice, overlooking the lake from our tents was a very special moment and made our night incredible

5.00As I thought about about where to stay during this time I thought I needed to ask and there I was asking the managing director of Burigi Chato Safaris: “Where can I sleep this night?” and he replied: “Where do you want to sleep” I replied: “Somewhere Special” He then directed one of the drivers to take me to the store where I could rent a tent for sleeping on by the rocky beach of the lake. I have nothing to give a complain about.

5.00It is beautiful out there and surrounded by nature which can make you day out. It is claimed to have its other half in Kenya. It is very relaxing. I took a drink to which I was serviced by my guide/driver from the company I booked with while sat near the lake. I was glad that I relaxed and enjoyed a conversation here. You can book it from Moshi to get there and let your self just relax back. But the price should not be much you have to negotiate because there are many that offer the so called ‘Mzungu Price’ which means price for foreigners because we as travelers have difficulties understanding the real price.

5.00The sunrise here is perfect. The food that was provided to me was very nice the guide and driver made sure I had the best of experience. The hidden gem was present in almost the mid of nowhere while the service providers gave us a very remarkable explanation of how this lake was formed. There is a fantastic view really this place is breathing taking. Though, the price of the place due to government is something we never liked we liked the place.

5.00The most spectacular lake in the world I preferred going there on foot since I was from hiking Kilimanjaro and I read it is a Caldera lake. There was a good reception at the gate it seems the place is very secure from armed robbery since there are responsible police officers. About the forest the guide told us a very sad story about the guy from Europe who drowned with his dog. The place has since then improved the infrastructure and safety measures. As we went higher the landscape changed

5.00There was time that when I go and wait with Burigi Chato Safaris I did not want to wait. Once I was at the airport I was happy that I chose this company. The lake is very interesting enough to impose rules on it. For example, once you swim to the border, this is because the lake is half in Tanzania Half in Kenya (Once you get to the other half you are not allowed to continue swimming at the lake). However, swimming comfortably and wave liability to throw you to the other side is reliable then you can make it. Go ahead and take a dive.
