Actun Tunichil Muknal is a mysterious and beautiful portal to the ancient Maya and their traditions, ceremonies and spirituality. This cave system served as a ceremonial site where the Maya performed sacrifices and other ceremonies as they dealt with extreme and harsh conditions in times of drought.
Explore this lush area surrounded by beautiful jungles, and the cave entrance is traversed by swimming across a crystal clear spring fed pool. Spend 3 hours in the cave after hiking in through the rain forest. Here you will see stunning artifacts, altars and the crystallized skeletons of the sacrificed girl, The Crystal Maiden.

Atm Cave Belize (actun Tunichil Muknal)
Taking a journey into the Maya underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) or the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre” for one of the most enlightening, epic and unique experiences of your life. Leave the world of the living behind as you venture into the heart of the ATM Cave with your licensed guide. Recently deemed the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only beautiful geologically with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural museum of ancient Maya artifacts, as well as a sacred burial place. This is the final resting place of “Crystal Maiden,” an ancient Maya ceremonial victim, as well as the remains of 13 other sacrificed men, women and children. Your professional guides have led government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, The British High Commission and US Embassy officials into the ATM Cave. This sacrificial site is accessed by a 45 minute drive from our office in San Ignacio.
Here we enter the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and park our vehicles at the ranger post. From this point on we are on foot, hiking through the jungle for approximately 45 minutes to the entrance of the cave. To access the cave we swim across a small spring- fed pool and wade into the dark underworld of the cave that allows us access the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers, climaxing in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics, the famed crystallized skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden”. We spend approximately 3 hours in the cave at the guidance of our experienced guides. We enter back into the jungle world and hike to our vehicles where we relax and enjoy a homemade picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before driving back to San Ignacio. Difficulty level: Moderate (involved some easy swimming and life jackets are provided for non-swimmers, who will also be escorted by our highly trained guide).
Explore the Maya underworld, where the sounds of ancient bloodletting ceremonies still echo off the walls of the crystal Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave (ATM). As featured in National Geographic!

The ATM Cave is incredible and a must do if you’re in Belize! Definitely need to be okay with tight spaces (I have claustrophobia and got stressed in a few spots but overall was okay) and have some level of physical fitness. The rock scrambles are easier than they seem. Definitely take it slow enough that you don’t slip and fall. The area where you walk without shoes is hard on your feet so consider yourself warned. Our guide was nice and knowledgeable but often moved too fast for the group to know where to stand or the safest way to get down the wet rocks. We would have liked for more guidance and support from him (other guides behind us stepped in to help a couple of times since our guide was so far ahead). Lunch was the typical Belize dish but not sure they made enough for everyone. I was still hungry when they took my plate.

This was an incredible experience. Our guide, Christian, was wonderful. Knowledgeable, encouraging and fun! Our tour included my husband, myself, and a family of four. The cave was challenging but entirely doable for anyone with decent mobility. The ascent to the dry part of the cave is up a decent sized boulder that made me nervous when I saw it (I’m terrified of heights). Christian gave explicit instructions on foot placement and I felt completely safe going up and down. On the way back, Christian asked if we wanted to go out the normal way or the adventure route. Trust me and pick the adventurer’s way. Tips for a great experience: 1. Hydrate well the night before and morning of because you cannot bring anything in with you. I am a 51 year old woman so I had to balance Christian’s recommendation that you hydrate on the trail to the cave with the reality that I would be miserable in the cave if I drank too much. Use the facilities at the parking lot, but know there is a single toilet at the cave entrance (that didn’t flush when I was there) if you find you need it again. I was fine because I was careful about water intake on the trail. 2. The email says no water shoes (because they don’t have great grip) but we bought some off Amazon with great grip that worked perfectly. Listen to your guide. Both for your safety and for the preservation of this cultural treasure.

The group was small and the experience was worth the money. Made friends and our guide Eric was phenomenal. If you get the pleasure of having Eric as your guide consider yourself lucky. He loves what he does and you will feel it, but he may spoil other trips for you because he is very good.

We had an amazing time on this tour. I can get a bit claustrophobic, but it wasn’t a problem at all. Great guides, beautiful cave, and delicious lunch. Enjoyed every minute!
