This trip puts a rod in every guest’s hand and gives you a crack at whatever species catch the scent trail your guide sets up on the bottom. This is an intimate fishing experience with 5 or 6 guests and a guide tucked into a hardtop aluminum cabin cruiser out on the halibut flats. Weather can be unpredictable, but a major advantage of fishing the Inside Passage is that there’s almost always a place we can hide behind an island, sheltering us from weather blowing in from the open sea.
At our company, we don’t worry about fuel burn. We want our guides to go where guests have the best chance at the most active fishing. Compared to most half-day charters in Alaska, these trips will carry guests farther into more distant and productive waters. That means a better chance at the fish, more coastal scenery, and a better chance at spotting wildlife like whales, sea lions, and porpoises!

Alaskan halibut fishing means dropping to depths of 200-400’ or more with large hooks, heavy leads, and juicy bait. The instant your rig hits the water, the scent of that bait begins to spread out from your position, carried by the tide. Down there in the twilight of the deep, rockfish, cod, flounder, sharks, skates, and the mighty halibut may encounter that scent, and start swimming your way. Your guide will put you in the best position possible to entice these fishes and instruct you on how to hook them, but ultimately it will be your hands on the rod if a hit comes. If that rod bends over, you will feel the power of a pristine ecosystem pulling back against you, striving to survive, and it will be up to you to bring that fish in. Your guide will encourage, advise, and do their best to land the fish, but the fight is all yours. If you are lucky enough to see one of these magnificent animals come to the surface, it’s a highlight of any Alaskan adventure. No matter what the conditions or the catch, this trip offers the best chance of exposing guests to the diverse and alien species found on the deep sea floor. *Halibut is limited to 1 per person per day up to 37" or over 80"

5.00I meant to write this month ago… Our family had an incredible day with Landon. He’s definitely passionate about fishing and we got to reap the benefits of his skill and passion. We quickly reached our halibut limit and he helped make sure it was properly shipped to us after we returned home from our Alaska vacation (Ketchikan wasn’t our last spot). We were lucky enough to see orcas too which was a trip bucket list item for us. We booked a private boat with him because we didn’t want to feel rushed catching our halibut max and doing the catch and cook experience too. So highly recommend the full custom combo. It was awesome and a highlight of our trip. I read others had success with Landon so I specifically requested him and I am so glad that I did. By the way, Landon sent us the cioppino recipe and I have made it several times since. The trip was almost worth that one recipe. So good!

5.00My son was here visiting and at almost the last minute I booked a halibut trip with baranof. We showed up they sent is up with rain gear, etc. In the boat captain lottery we drew David Dettinger. He was great. He really put us on the fish and managed to put my son in place for some footage of humpbacks. We tore up the fish and David is friendly and fun to be around.

5.00Best part of our Ketchikan vacation was this fishing trip! Our capitán David Dentinger was just absolutely amazing!! Not only did we all catch fish we got to see whales! Planning on doing this again very soon! Thank you David!

5.00Steve Craven’s is an excellent guide! He made it so easy with getting us set up, teaching us the correct way to fish and when we caught a lot of halibut we literally did nothing. Steve did everything for us. Steve is very easy to talk to and knows a lot about what he does. He’s the perfect guide for us! We highly recommend using Baranof and asking for Steve. You will not be disappointed!

5.00Had an absolutely great time. 5 stars all the way. I caught 2 halibut and a lingcod. Brant was awesome as our captain. He knew the area very well and got us on the fish. He was very patient and helpful to some of the people who didn’t know fishing so well. I am coming up again next year and will definitely go again. I will definitely ask for Brant as a captain.
