Tōno is a rural town in the hills of central Iwate Prefecture. The area is notable for its rustic landscapes and traditional farming culture. But Tono is best known as a repository of Japanese folklore due to its legends of spirits, animals and supernatural creatures. This rich oral tradition was passed down through generations of storytellers.

Kappabuchi
It is claimed that a number of mischievous Kappa river sprites, which love to threaten people and play tricks on passersby, live in the small stream in Tsuchibuchi-cho running behind Joken-ji Temple. Apparently the Kappa appear even now along the clear stream hidden by the surrounding thickets. Near the stream is a small shrine to the Kappa gods where expectant mothers go and leave breast-shaped red clothes to pray that they will be able to breastfeed their child.
Unedorisama Shrine
A small wayside shrine known to be the home of the god of love. Buy a small red cloth from the unmanned shop in the shrine grounds, tie it to a tree with just your left hand and you’ll be tied with the one you love.

5.00Our private tour with Masatoshi Fujii ( Masa) was excellent.He was very knowledgeable about Japan,the culture,the history.All our questions were answered and he was very good at organizing our chosen itinerary of visits. He is a really nice and friendly man who really went the extra mile to make sure we were able to do everything we wanted to do- including an out of the blue request to visit the Pokemon Store to buy gifts for the grandchildren! Thank you very much Masa San .

5.00Yoshi provided us with the perfect day. Three generations incl children aged 6, 11 and 13 all absolutely loved the day. Yoshi had asked in advance about age, interests etc and really ensured we had something for everyone. We absolutely loved it. Thanks again Yoshi from the whole family.

5.00I visited Otaru as a detour not originally planned on our cruise port schedule. This was exciting because my mothers hometown was Otaru City and had passed away 30 years ago and interred in a family vault. Michiko went above and beyond by communicating with my Uncle and translating. Then locating the temple, speaking with the priest. In addition to assisting me with this mission she showed me the Old Aoyama Villa of the wealthy Masakichi family that made their fortune with herring. The grounds were extraordinary and the home offered a step into Japanese history. Michoko guided me through the town to the Canal and shopping district. It was lovely to see these areas and experience the vibrancy of the main city! The shopping was excellent. In summary, my visit to Otaru City was extremely memorable. I highly recommend Michiko as an excellent English Speaking guide in Otaru!

5.00We had an amazing day in Tokyo with our kind guide Yoshii Kenichi. We explored the beautiful sites of Tokyo and learnt many new things about Japan. Yoshii was very patient and waited for us at all the shops we went into. We ended the day by eating dinner together at a wonderful restaurant. We overall highly recommend.
