Amberd Fortress

Amberd is the largest standing fortress in Armenia, located on the southern slopes of Mount Aragats.The mansion and some sections of the walls were constructed in the 7th century by the noble house of Kamsarakan. In the 10th century it was rebuilt by Vahram Pahlavuni. The fortress became the military defense center of the Pahlavuni and Bagratuni kingdoms, as well as the summer residence of the rulers.The complex of Amberd is one of the best examples of Armenian fortress construction. The site incorporates a rich variety of buildings inclding: a church, a chapel, baths, walls and several gates.

We were on vacation in Armenia from September 2 to 12, 2022, to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, and we carried out many excursions, mostly private tours, with different agencies. We have great memories of all of them, but especially the one we did to Amberd fortress, Lake Kari, Mount Aragats and Byurakan Observatory (a very special destination for me, since I am an astrophysicist by training) with New Silk Way, accompanied by our wonderful guide Sona Petrosyan (Tour Manager of the Agency). The logistics of the excursion was excellent, the visits, gorgeous and Sona's explanations, very instructive. We would like to highlight the great kindness and professionalism of our guide, who even went beyond of what is expected of a guide to make our adventure an unforgettable experience.
