Ghana was a dream come true for my husband and me, especially as we celebrated our belated 70th birthdays. Thanks to a recommendation from my husband's nephew’s friend, we connected with the incredible Lennox, Thomas, and Kobby of Afro Thrill Seekers. From the moment we video chatted with them; we knew they were the perfect guides. They listened to our hopes and dreams for the trip, tailoring a 12-day itinerary that was both exciting and affordable. When we arrived in Accra, we were greeted like family. They met us at the airport, welcomed us in Ghanian style and treated us to our first native dishes, at the beautiful Buka restaurant before taking us to our hotel. Lennox and Thomas took us around all the sites, sharing stories about Ghanaian culture, history, and cuisine. All the restaurants they chose for us to have lunch or dinner were amazing. It felt like we were exploring the country with old friends. Kobby joined us for a couple of the tours. One of the most moving experiences was visiting the Assin Manso Ancestral Slave Site, Cape Coast Castle and Osu Castle. Walking in the footsteps of our ancestors was a humbling and heartbreaking experience. We also had a blast visiting the Kwame Nkrumah Museum, National Museum Gallery, Cultural naming ceremony, took part in a Ghanian Family Day Local Authentic Cooking Tour, went to Kakum National Park (we even surprised ourselves doing the 7 canopy walkways 130 ft above ground), visited Aburi Gardens, Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Cocoa Farm, Nkyimkyim Museum. Flew to Kumasi for a day and experienced the weaving of the Kente cloth, visit Ntonso Adinkra, King Prempeh Museum and Manyia Palace. Ghana is a beautiful country with so much to offer. We can't wait to return and explore more of this amazing place. If you're planning a trip to Ghana, we highly recommend these three awesome young men Lennox, Thomas and Kobby of Afro Thrill Seekers. They made our experience unforgettable.

As a member of the African diaspora, I've always had a deep desire to visit the continent. Having done our research, my wife and I opted to start with Ghana (at least Accra and the surrounding area). We were NOT disappointed. It is a lovely city with warm charming people. It truly was an amazing trip, the highlight of which was the Ancestral and Slave History Tour in Cape Coast with Afro Thrillseekers Tours. Our guides Lennox and Kobby picked us up promptly at the assigned time at our hotel in Accra and took us on the 150 kms journey. The roads were not exactly the smoothest but there were lots of things to see along the way. The sights, smells and sounds were very reminiscent of many areas of the Caribbean or coastal South America. We had lots of questions and Lennox and Kobby were only too happy to supply the answers. Once in the Cape Coast area, we had two very different yet equally powerful experiences. First, there was the Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park. It is a very understated place (and I hope that it forever remains that way). There we met Kofi, an extremely knowledgeable and affable tour guide, who walked us through the area... the area where my African forefathers very possibly had their last bath before being taken to the storage area for the brutal trans-Atlantic voyage. It's a solemn place and the personal significance of my return was emotionally overwhelming... especially when watching my wife dance to the beat of the drums like she she'd never left! Next, it was off to the Cape Coast Castle. An imposing structure with a very dark history. Again, you'll have your own emotional experience there. I chose not to dwell in that dark space however but opted to focus on the magnificent vistas seen from the top of the castle and ponder on all that had happened to the people of this region (on both sides of the Atlantic) in the period since the end of the slave trade. The day ended as it began, with the 2hr 45min drive back to Accra with Lennox and Kobby. By this time, we had forged a wonderful relationship. Their attention to detail was fantastic and they made us feel more like long lost family, than tourists. We can't wait to return and see what other hidden gems await us. When we do, we'll be using Afro Thrillseekers Tours.
