We enjoyed the experience but it was grossly overpriced compared to other experiences in Japan. We were able to select one of their Kumiko figures and assembled it using the instructions provided in their kit. We were then shown around the room where various beautiful joinery products made in the workshop were on display. There were some jigs and woodworking tools on display. It was all very nice to see, but with very limited hands on experience, other than assembling the pre cut kit, much like doing a jigsaw. The venue is hard to get to by public transport. In summary, we enjoyed the 80 minutes with our host using the Google Translater app, but didn't feel it justified the considerable fee charged.

This is going to be the highlight of my visit to Japan. The instructor was a knowledgeable craftsman, was patient with me and answered questions about the techniques, the woods used, etc. i had some knowledge of the craft from attempting a couple projects on my own, but I learned so much, and have a deeper appreciation of the detail and precision that goes into these workpieces. Inspired by what I have learned, I can’t wait to get back home and improve my skills and try new techniques.

We had a great experience making a small traditional kumiko craft. First they took us through a traditional Japanese style house with many beautiful wood panels made by the artisans. It’s impossible to capture in a picture or fully describe. And the fact that there is no glue or fastenings is amazing. Next we made our own crafts, with some help from the craftsmen and women. They then showed us some other pieces of kumiko art in the shop. A truly unique experience overall! The workshop is a bit out of the way but we made it on public transport. Just make sure you check the map and have a plan. They were super gracious to offer us a ride back to Tonami station at the end.

I had the yoseki experience in Hakone before but this is nothing like that. We made a coaster by connecting the precisely cut wooden pieces without any nails or tools. One needs some skills and patience but anyone will be able to enjoy it. The lady showed us their amazing craftswork displays in a Japanese tatami room settings. She also explained the meanings of various patterns. It is absolutely stunning to see and understand how they can bend a hard wood strip into maze~like patterns.

It is located in the surroundings of the Inami region, which is very famous in Japan for its historical tradition of woodcarving. This company is specialized in "Kumiko", a technique of assembling truss structures of wood, forming traditional Japanese shapes. An impressive thing here is that it does not use any glue or fastening elements, and still the structures have forms and are very strong. You can literally experience its precision and strength in the workshop. The cuts match smoothly, and, maybe the pretensioning to fit the part is a bit difficult for ones who have big fingers but, once mounted it feels like a single solid part. You can choose from a variety of shape patterns. They also took us on a tour inside a traditional Japanese house, their model home I guess, explaining the entrance partition, window frame, and other structures and decorations built by them.

A tour I have participated, in Tonami City Toyama, art of Kimiko a traditional Japanese woodworking technique. First we were shown a Shoin-zukuri lovely traditional styled Japanese home with interiors decorated with different kinds of wooden joinery (window sash, main door decorative panel). We admired the detailed painstaking craftmanship assembling thin pieces of wood into geometric pattern and shapes, each explained briefly the history and how these assembly was refined and passed down from generations of craftsmen. Then back to the spacious workshop where we got to assemble pre made thinly sliced pieces of grooved wood to create our very own Kumiko design as souvenir. A skilled master craftsman also showed us how to use of a plane on very fragrant Japanese cedar wood we get to try it ourselves. It was a very memorable and enjoyable experience. 河島建具/Kawashima Tategu 富山県砺波市荒高屋511-2

I have never heard of Kumiko before joining this tour. Japan is well-known for paying attention to details and this workshop further proves it to us foreigners. I have mad respect for artisans and Japanese takumi truly are amazing. I am also fascinated by the intricate designs and patterns with different meanings attached to them. The guides at the workshop were very warm and kind to us. We shot many questions and all of them were carefully answered. Besides, a Kumiko design is a perfect souvenir from the tour. I think families with kids will truly enjoy this tour.
