Broad Street
Bridgetown. On the 5th of July 1628 that 64 settlers headed by Charles Wolverstone arrived. The location of Bridgetown was the most suitable place for a port. Its swampy lands however made it bad for the settlers’ health. The settlers named the town after a bridge that had been constructed by the early inhabitants of the island, the Amerindians. The Bridge of itself was called the Indian Bridge The principle streets in Bridgetown were laid out by John Swan and in keeping with tradition Swan street was named after him. The main street Broad Street was named Broad Street as it is the broadest street in the town. In the early years the streets in town were ill kept and in 1656 legislature passed and act where persons not keeping the space in front of their property clean could be fined 100 pounds of sugar for each day of noncompliance. Bridgetown's Swamp was filled in and replaced with a canal. The lower part of the Constitution is called the Careenage. It was named the Careenage because it ships were careened on to a side to be repaired
Morgan Lewis Sugar Mill
Morgan Lewis Windmill is located in the scenic hills of St. Andrew in Barbados and commands a most commanding view of the phenomenal east coast. Built in 1727, this typical wind-driven mill once crushed sugarcane to produce juice during the 18th and 19th centuries. Morgan Lewis Windmill stopped its operation in 1947 and was subsequently handed over to the Barbados National Trust for preservation as a museum. Morgan Lewis Windmill is among the World Monuments Fund list of 100 Most Endangered Sites in the World.

A great tour- our guide Omar was very informative and we really enjoyed our day touring around with him. We booked the Barbados highlights and rum tour and had expected to go on a tour of the Mount Gay distillery but in fact we went to the visitor centre but this was still enjoyable. The only part of the day that we didn’t enjoy was the lunch - the setting was nice but the food wasn’t great. Apart from that I would recommend though.

So much fun and such a relaxing way to spend the day. Mt Gay rum experience was decent; we did this at the end of the tour around the island.

Only enjoyable portion was visit to Mt Gay. Very little info given while visiting the attractions. Far too much uneventful bus travel.

The tour is a great way to get the view of Barbados. We went all the way around the island saw a few parishes, both towns, Bridgetown, and the hole town. We had a little fun seeing Rihanna‘s house she was born in and then the fancy Neighborhood of Saint James Parish on Sandy Lane. We had a nice lunch by the beach and had a great rum tour.

The driver Guami first asked if we were the alcoholics. I was confused. He finally said yes, he was the driver and confirmed my name in the van. He then told us how he hates to work on Tuesdays, which was today. What do you say to that? He coughed and I wondered if he has some type if infection. He was not the friendly driver I had heard about. His information about the island was good. His driving was fine. The van had sand on the floor and dirty windows. Finally, I misunderstood and thought we were doing rum tasting in St. Lucy, not Bridgetown. Though the tasting was a good experience. Lunch at Savvy was delicious.

Steven took us on a wonderful tour around Barbados sharing tidbits about sites as we passed them. It was a great way to see a lot of the island from someone who has lived here all his life. We had a lovely lunch at Savvy on the Bay before we took the Mount Gay Rum tour.

We had a great day with Chris Ellis. The guide makes the experience and she does just that. A lovely lady… professional yet relaxed and funny, she made sure we all learned and enjoyed ourselves. We would be happy to go anywhere with Chris again. -David King
