This market takes you out of the charming old city and into the depths of local life in Cartagena. The Mercado de Bazurto is dirty, rowdy and huge. It is filled with intriguing items ranging from knock-off brand name sports gear to some of the most fresh and exotic Colombian ingredients not found in the supermarkets. Being wary of thieves and locals, tourists don’t tend to venture into this market often or alone. But if you are an adventure-seeking traveller, this market is worth a visit for the cultural experience alone.

Cindy and Andre led us through the central market of Cartagena early one morning this week. This market is the heart (and the stomach) of the city of Cartagena. Weaving through the narrow pathways with the busiest merchants of fish, fowl, meats, fruits and vegetables was like a visit to another world. She explained what we were looking at, be it fish or meats, fruits or vegetables. I had no idea of the incredible diversity of the vegetation of Colombia. Incredible experience which would have been so much less without her. We had a wonderful brunch of local and diverse foods cooked right in front of us. Not to be missed.

Off the Beaten Path: A great visit to the Bazurto Food Market in Cartagena

Cindy of Cartagena Concierge did a great job organizing a trip to the Bazurto Food Market for me followed by a beach front lunch with the fresh lobster we bought at the market. The market is gritty, perhaps not for every tourist, but it was so colorful and interesting to visit the stalls selling meat--even cow's eyeballs--all types of fish, all types of tropical fruits and vegetables. Cindy accompanied me on the visit and was great navigating the byzantine alleys of the marketplace. The old city of Cartagena can feel very touristy, so visiting the market was like a breath of fresh air and a chance to experience local life. After the market, we drove to the Boquilla beach nearby and a lovely local lady prepared the lobsters we had just bought at the market. We had a wonderful beach side lunch with coconut rice, grilled lobster, plaintains, salad, and local beer. It was a great morning and early afternoon. The driver was also terrific. A Cartagena local, Cindy is super nice, down to earth, and a font of great information about living in Cartagena and its history. I highly recommend a visit to the market with Cartagena Concierge.
