Barbados Garrison
The Garrison Historic Area From 1655 large fleets of British ships and soldiers were visiting and Barbados making it there base of operation. In the early years there were no barracks for them or provisions, the care and expense of the officers fell in the hands of Barbadians themselves. After repeated visits this became quite burdensome especially considering it was at a time when the island was quite impoverished. The legislature of Barbados was moved to petition the British government for a permanent garrison to be built on the island. It was not until 1780 that it was finally decided by the British Government to station a permanent garrison on the island. It was eventually decided that the Garrisons should be built near Charles Fort and St Anne’s Castle. 16 acres were purchased in 1789 and construction began by the early 19th century most of the buildings had been completed and had grown to cover 64 acres. The Garrison in Barbados is in fact the largest in the Caribbean. Many of the buildings were constructed of London brick brought out as ballast in ships which returned with sugar. Some 60 of the original buildings are still in existence today. The Savannah of itself was a very rocky area where many crabs lived. It had to be filled in and leveled for the troops to practice on. It was also the birthplace of cricket in Barbados and today serves as the islands racetrack. On November 30th 1966 Barbados was led into Independence by the then Premier Errol Walton Barrow, officially celebrating the achievement of nationhood as a sovereign and independent state within the Commonwealth

The tour could have been fun but our tour guide didn’t explain anything. No snack Also in the bus, when he was speaking, we couldn’t ear very well. It will have needed a microphone. Animal Flower us a must see

Excellent tour of the island from bottom to top! Charles, our driver/ guide for the day provided some great commentary, along with facts and figures. Picked up promptly at 08:45, we collected another 2 couples and off we went. Various stops at lovely beaches for photos, or rum punch bottles, then the rest of the tour as mostly advertised. The lunch at the Animal Flower Cave restaurant was super...fish, chicken or veg with amazing views out over the sea. The stop at the bakery in Speightstown, was a personal highlight, but I do love a pastry. We did have to miss Bridgetown, due to a traffic accident, but we'd had a great day, seen some beautiful bits of the island and had lots of laughs along the way.

Our driver was Winston. He was warm and friendly and made everybody feel very welcome, as though he couldn’t wait to spend the day with us all. His “commentary” was interesting and delivered in a very clear manner and also with humour. Winston engaged with everybody in the tour and was a joy to spend time with. This was, easily, the best tour if this kind we have ever been on.

We had a lovely day with Glyne! We wish there had been better communication before the tour began because we were told we had a 7:50 pickup for a 9:45am tour, which seemed odd, and we wanted to confirm that this was accurate, but we couldn’t reach anyone by phone, text, email, or What’s App. Wish we didn’t have to be picked up two hours earlier than our tour start time! Glyne, however, showed up promptly at 7:50am and was extremely talkative & informative throughout the day. He used a microphone, so he was easy to hear while he told us about the island, geography, politics, some history, and his life and family. In fact, his volume was a bit too loud for us, but maybe others benefited from the high volume. We would have liked to learn a bit more about Animal Flower Cave and Codrington College (perhaps from an onsite expert), but Glyne was very knowledgeable about most of the other spots we visited. He’s an excellent driver and full of jokes and anecdotes. He was also very organized and made sure everyone was back at the van after 10-15 minutes per stop. Our lunch at Animal Flower Cave (overlooking the ocean) was delicious. Glyne shared homemade coconut cake and cold bottles of rum punch at the end of the tour and cold water throughout the day. He took us to some absolutely gorgeous spots, which offered great photo opportunities. I was just eager for a bit more history. Perhaps a visit to the interior of a famous historical church or the old synagogue could have been included or a visit to some significant government building or landmark. It also would have been fun to visit a school when classes were in session. Codrington College seemed mostly empty while we were there. The van was air-conditioned, but we could have used a bit more AC—as it was a very hot day. Overall, it was an excellent tour, and Glyne is a high-energy guide with a lot of information to share. We recommend this tour if you’d like to see several different sections of the island with a gregarious, charismatic, punctual guide.
