At the junction of Bosnia and Herzegovina with Montenegro, at the foot of the high mountains of Maglić, Volujak and Zelengora, where the inaccessible canyon of the river Sutjeska widens, the settlement of Tjentište was tucked away. The large memorial complex was built on Tjentište in honor and memory of the great Battle of Sutjeska (5th Offensive, "Operation Schwarz"), one of the bloodiest battles fought by partisan forces in 1943 against combined German and Italian troops.
The subsequent development of the activity brought with it decisions for the expansion and construction of a larger complex, which includes: the Sutjeska Battle Memorial, an ossuary, a small brigade amphitheater, the Battle Museum, the Sutjeska Battle Memorial House (Spomen dom) and a number of memorials in the vicinity of Tjentišta.
The area of Sutjeska was declared a National Park on January 13, 1962.

Tjentiste War Memorial
The National Park “Sutjeska” rightfully carries the epithet of the pearls of the Republic of Srpska. The oldest and largest national park in the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina extends to 16,052.34 ha, and more than 66% is covered with forests, while the rest are meadows, pastures and tents. Sutjeska National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is home to the last rainforest in Europe. Moreover, the highest peak of the mountain Maglić (2386 meters above the sea level) is also located within the national park and at the same time it is the highest peak in the whole country. Sutjeska is known to the wider public as the site of the Battle of Sutjeska in 1943 during the Second World War.

I booked this daytrip through Viator but it almost did not take place, since it was still early in the season and not enough people signed up. However, Spirit Tours did their very best to rearrange their bookings so they were able to organize the trip. We went with three people and a guide to the memorial site. However, when we got there the guide (a very friendly man) did not really show us around but gave us 2 hours of free time to explore. Afterwards it turned out that there had been some miscommunication and that our guide was actually just a driver. When I told Spirit Tours about this, they apologized, admitted they made a mistake and refunded part of my tour. I must admit that I have never experienced this kind of customer service with a tour guide agency. I will definitely book a tour with them and a real guide ;-) next time I'm in Sarajevo!
