Yungang Grottoes

Excavated from 460 AD during the Northern Wei Dynasty, this UNESCO World Heritage site features 45 major caves and over 59,000 statues. As China's first royal-commissioned grottoes, Yungang marks the beginning of Buddhist art's sinicization. The five "Tan Yao Caves" (Caves 16–20) blend Central Asian and Chinese styles; the middle period caves showcase intricate carvings with flying apsaras and celestial musicians; later caves reveal a more slender, ethereal aesthetic.
