This upland city in south -central Albania has 2600 years of history, which has bestowed it with stunning archaeology ,quaint residential areas and preserved monuments . Berat's appeal lies in its UNESCO World Heritage architecture and the epic mountain scenery that shelters the city. Since coming under the yoke of the Ottoman Empire in the 1400s Berat is also a place where Christians and Muslims have lived together in relative peace.

Berat Castle

The tour starts at 8:30 am from Adriatik Hotel and it will take approximately 2 hours to reach Berat city. Once we get to the city, we will visit Berat Castle, which dates back to 4th century BC. There, you will learn a little history of Berat. The castle is one of the biggest inhabited castles and has many Byzantine churches, as well as some mosques built during the Ottoman era, which began in 1417.

National Iconographic Museum Onufri

Our walk in the castle will take us to Onufri Museum, which is set up inside the cathedral of Saint Mary, renovated in the 18th century. Besides the beautifully carved iconostasis, you can also admire the icons of the renowned Albanian painter Onufri.

We had a lovely day being shown round the lovely city of Berat. The castle and the churches were great to walk around and Sara our tour guide gave us loads of really interesting information. We stopped for lunch at a lovely restaurant and sampled the local cuisine. We would thoroughly recommend.

We spent a lovely day in Berat with our tour guide Mario. In the morning we went to visit the castle of Berat. Breathtaking views, mosques and various churches from different eras. We had a fun and very competent tour guide. Later we tried fresh figs and ate typical Albanian food. I as not Albanian must say it was very fine, what just takes getting used to is the goat cheese taste. We recommend that everyone book a tour with Mario. We had fun all day and laughed a lot. Absolute highlight of the 3 excursions in Albania. Even the drive through the mountains to Berat is worth seeing. The castle above Berat offers fantastic views over the various districts of Berat and the surrounding area and is inhabited indoors. Afterwards a leisurely stroll through the older part of Berat with its narrow streets. Afterwards we continued into the mountains to a great small restaurant, and finally a tour of an Albanian raki distillery with tasting. Albanian raki is very tasty and without anise has quite a bit of rotation.

Mario and his driver Lulla picked us up from the hotel around 9am for a private excursion to Berat with a return around 5pm. Thanks to Mario for his explanations and the time he took to show us around Berat and meet locals. Really a excursion to make. Only downside, Lulla should drive slower back, my wife really didn't appreciate it

We booked 8 hour trip from Durres to Berat. It was amazing experience as Mario had really good English and a lot of knowledge aboutt Berat and Albania. We can recommend Adriatik Tours to anyone traveling to Albania.
