2.00This is one of the important places to visit in Budapest, so we were keen to see it. Our first shock was the price to get in, 29,000 HUF for 2, which was about £73 at the exchange rate in June. We are seniors and there was no discount unlike many other places we visited. Having decided to pay, the next surprise was the rudeness of the ticket and security staff, neither very welcoming. The third surprise was the tour guide described as ‘free’, they really mean ‘included’. He gave quite a brief explanation in the synagogue followed by a brief stop at the cemetery and Tree of Life, barely 20minutes. After he left we were free to look around without limit which was good. The exhibition about the Ghetto was interesting, although not well displayed, for example a video presentation was at the entry to an alcove with no seats, so when a crowd stood around other visitors had to push past them to see the wall displays in the alcove. The museum had some interesting artefacts about Jewish culture and life. As we arrived at one area, a group went in and put a chair across the entrance preventing us from continuing the exhibition which was annoying. In conclusion, there were parts of this that were very interesting, but overall poor value for money. We can’t help feeling that the price will exclude many people and families when we all should be able to reflect on the horrors of the past.

5.00Miki our guide went in depth, proved patient and was generous with his time. The synaguoge per se is very interesting as it combines several influences from within and from outside Judaism proper. We benefitted from a complete overview of Jewish history in Hungary over the last 200 years or so with many captivating insights. Highly recommended.

4.00Women need to have their knees covered and it would have been helpful to have known this in advance. I had to purchase a ‘wrap’ prior to entering the synagogue as I was wearing shorts. Also the guide Milan was very knowledgeable but a little hard to understand.

5.00Exquisite ornate synagogue unlike any others. Our tour guide Flavia was very knowledgeable and passionate adding a lot of additional historical background to the tour. One can only imagine what attending a service would have been like pre Shoah
