Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo
The Ivanovo Rock-Hewn Churches are a group of medieval churches, chapels, and monasteries carved directly into the cliffs of the Rusenski Lom river valley near the village of Ivanovo in northern Bulgaria. They are famous for their remarkable 13th- to 14th-century frescoes, which are among the finest examples of Eastern European medieval art. These religious sites were not built in the traditional sense but hollowed out of solid rock by monks during the Second Bulgarian Empire. The complex once included over 40 churches and monastic cells, connected by paths and stairways along the rock face. In 1979, the Ivanovo Rock-Hewn Churches were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their unique architecture, historical significance, and stunning wall paintings that reflect both Byzantine and local artistic influences.
