Caherconnell Stone Fort & Sheepdog Demonstrations
Caherconnell Stone Fort, situated 1km south of Poulnabrone dolmen in the heart of the Burren Ireland, offers you the opportunity to visit an exceptionally well - preserved example of the stone forts or stone ringforts which are to be found in the Burren Ireland. The fort is in its original state. Its position, overlooking virtually all-surrounding areas suggests a defensive settlement. Archaeological excavations take place each summer in association with 'CAFS' - Caherconnell Archaeological Field School- an International Field School accredited by NUI, Galway. As well as a trip to the Fort, visitors can also take in the Burren's Premier Sheepdog Demonstrations at Caherconnell, enjoying the combined skills of the farmer and the border collie as they work in the natural habitat of the Burren. The sheepdog demonstration times are available on our website

5.00I took my wife and kids and we all loved it. It was fun watching and learning about shepherding, dogs, and an ancient way of life. You’ll love it too.

5.00Excellent tour of the fort, and Pat was a great guide! We stopped in on a whim during a day exploring around the Burren and County Clare, and this ended up being one of the best things we did that day. Tour was informative, very interesting history. We did not stay for the sheepdog demonstrations, but hope to return!

5.00I absolutely loved visiting Caherconnell! I took a taxi from Galway and it was my first time traveling through the Burren, which was stunning. I learned more about the Burren during the Caherconnell fort tour, and that was fascinating to me to learn and see the ruins. After, we were able to enjoy the sheepdog demonstration, which was a highlight from my entire trip to Ireland! I loved seeing the different personalities of the dogs, and their ability to work to move the herd of sheep was amazing. I loved learning about the different types of sheep, and holding the baby lambs was such an adorable and unique experience. I have already highly recommended this to several people! I loved the options for merchandise, and the store had an amazing array of Labaabaas to choose from as well, which was the perfect souvenir after spending a day with the sheep. I was so excited for the experience, and the staff were excited with me, and so knowledgeable about the area.

5.00It was a wonderful time. We learned a lot and the demo was fantastic. You also get to meet the dogs at the end and hold lambs. Great activity we weren’t expecting to do on our trip. There’s also a great cafe that sells local cheese.

5.00The location was beautiful. Dogs were so smart and it was fun to watch the demonstration. Best part was visiting with the lambs after! Staff was very friendly and welcoming.

5.00We had a great time at the sheepdog demonstration! The viewing platforms helped everyone see, and the handler who was working with the dogs used a microphone when he was explaining things to us. We watched four dogs herd the sheep based on various commands. Afterwards we went to a pen to learn more about the various sheep in the flock, and we even got to hold some of the baby lambs.

5.00We had an excellent time during the fort tour and sheepdog demonstration. The history details and explanations were fascinating and well studied. We all loved watching the sheepdogs in action and holding a baby lamb! The cafe had delicious food for lunch and all the staff were kind and helpful. A must see if you are in the area!
