Caherconnell Stone Fort & Sheepdog Demonstrations
Caherconnell Stone Fort, situated 1km south of Poulnabrone dolmen in the heart of the Burren Ireland, offers you the opportunity to visit an exceptionally well - preserved example of the stone forts or stone ringforts which are to be found in the Burren Ireland. The fort is in its original state. Its position, overlooking virtually all-surrounding areas suggests a defensive settlement. Archaeological excavations take place each summer in association with 'CAFS' - Caherconnell Archaeological Field School- an International Field School accredited by NUI, Galway. As well as a trip to the Fort, visitors can also take in the Burren's Premier Sheepdog Demonstrations at Caherconnell, enjoying the combined skills of the farmer and the border collie as they work in the natural habitat of the Burren. The sheepdog demonstration times are available on our website
Admission to Caherconnell Fort and Sheepdog Demos. Demos scheduled for 14.00 daily.

The sheepdog demonstration was kind of amazing and so much fun! It was interesting to hear how the dogs are trained and really fun to watch them in action. We didn’t have the kids with us, but this would definitely be enjoyed by families of all ages and abilities. Very little walking required as visitors watch from a small set of bleachers in an accessible covered/sheltered viewing area, so we were comfortable even on a cold, rainy March day. A little bit of info about the sheep and a meet and greet with the dogs rounded out the experience. The small cafeteria was a nice little amenity (and tasty!) and the gift shop was surprisingly well curated with a mix of some of the usual tourist shops items (like flat caps), but also featuring some local things unique to the site or the area that we didn’t encounter at other shops (and the prices were better than the tourist shops in Dublin and Killarney). The family/staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly and took the time to explain the tax back option (which we had been ignorant of), and gave some directions and advice about the local area. We were happy to support what certainly felt like a small family farm preserving the culture! We only self-toured the fort due to time, but later kind of wished we’d stayed for the guided tour! The only improvement I could possibly suggest is that I would have loved to have spent even more time seeing the dogs in action. If they had an extended demonstration option (maybe coupled with walking around the landscape and seeing the people and dogs work together on the ground?) I would have totally been up for that!

This was the first time any of family of 6 adults had seen sheep dogs in person. I had seen them on youtube videos (including Caherconnell) but this up front experience was quite unique. The handler, a massive fellow who could probably carry a full grown Kerry Cow on his shoulders, was humorous, informative, and gentle but in command of the dogs, I think there were at least five. They responded to his whistle and voice. The speaker system needs some attention so that all could hear much more clearly. At the end, we could actually approach and pet these hard-working and loveable BOrder collies. The Ring Fort tour and guide was quite informative sharing with us its history which dates back to the 10th century and how it changed over the centuries. Families actually lived here into the last 1500s. This is one of the best preserved ring/circular fort structures in Ireland. Excavations found Venetian glass, Baltic amber, and iron making.

Another delightful surprise in Ireland! The stone fort is fascinating and the tour was very informative. The guide is in tune with the times of the sheepdog demonstrations so makes sure you make it. The demonstration was fascinating--both to see how amazingly the dogs work with the sheep and to see how they have minds of their own! It was a real education about the different whistles for different dogs and learning about the different kinds of sheep. The risers are set such that everyone can see with no trouble. And the opportunity to meet the dogs afterwards was a treat. The people who work there are so nice!

We began our visit at Caherconnell with a tour of the stone fort given by a truly kind, hilarious and enthusiastic guide named Sean. He was such a good sport and didn’t skimp on any aspect of the tour even though he would have been justified in doing so, since our visit happened to be on a day where the rain and wind were absurd. The history of the stone fort goes back millennia and the information we learned about the life of the inhabitants was fascinating. After our tour of the stone fort, we were treated to an incredible display with the sheepdog demonstration. Caherconnell gets so many bonus points in our book for having the forethought to provide a shelter with covered seating to keep their guests comfortable in all weather. The dogs are clearly very well cared for and well loved and their training was incredible to see. The shepherd giving the demonstration was also absolutely hilarious. We didn’t expect a comedy show during the sheepdog demonstration but that is what we got and it was delightful. It was also so great to see sheepdogs doing what they were born to do. Everyone at Caherconnell, from the tour guide, the shepherd and the staff members working in the shop and cafe, were absolutely wonderful. We really could not have had a better experience. If you love history, cute animals, and kind people, it would truly be a mistake to miss the experience Caherconnell offers.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Ireland! The tour of the stone fort was very interesting; our guide Pat was terrific. Learned so much about the history of the area, and even things as simple as why there are different types of stone walls. The sheepdog demonstration was amazing (go Sally!), and again, we learned so much about the dogs and how they are trained, and even about the types of sheep! And they have a fantastic gift shop as well as a cafe with lots of tasty offerings. We were there for hours! I can't recommend them highly enough!!

This was the best time. I would recommend it to anyone visiting the area. The dogs - sally, Jill, rose, and Lynn, were so fun to watch and very impressive.

The visit started with a walk to a stone fort which is part of an active archeology site. Our guide was able to give us extensive information about the site, its history and it's findings. Then on to see the sheepdog demonstration. We were introduced to the dogs and watched them in action while they rounded up the sheep. I found it very interesting how the dogs differentiated different whistling sounds to get their instructions. The whole experience was intriguing. Afterwards, we had a chance to get up close to the dogs and give them a little scratch behind the ears or a belly rub

Very fun and informative stop! We learned a lot from both the sheepdog demonstration and the fort tour. Of course, the best part was getting to pet the dogs!

I stopped off here for lunch. The restaurant is spacious and welcoming. I had soup and a sandwich which was delicious and reasonably priced. I noticed that the staff were polite and friendly and up to speed on specific dietary requirements. The site is wheelchair accessible with a good car park. There are excellent toilet facilities too.
